Bengals Looking Hard At Eskimo

Uh, this wasn't exactly what I had in mind for defensive help this off-season...a 230 pound DE who'd play as a SAM LB pass rusher from the CFL? I guess Marvin "loved him" and the guy must have some ability (if the Dolphins are also that interested), just a strange way to go.

Sounds more like a guy worth taking a long look at in training camp - but this guy doesn't want to be a "body" in training camp, just to get cut - he wants some upfront dough - $20k-$30k - he's breaking the bank man! :)

Jeanty Expecting Offer From Bengals And Dolphins

Sounds like much ado about nothing to me. There was a lot of positive media about Larry Stevens as a LB if Pollack couldn't cut it. We waived him in favor of Nate Webster, who we knew would not play a down this season. Just sounds like Marvin continuing to try to keep competition high.

I doubt we have a real playmaker here. Best case scenario: He's a decent backup that will play for the base salary, so we can have even more freedom with cap issues.

Yeah, wouldn't think a tweener like that wouldn't be too high on the priority list, especially if he's projected at SSLB where Pollack already is and Landon Johnson can play rather than WSLB where Simmons has got some age on him. Jeanty would seem more of a 3-4 OLB like he was projected when he entered the draft early last year.

It's interesting to read who the Bengals have visit and who they talk to at the Senior Bowl and the combine. Of course, we get to read very little about this from the Cincinnati papers so far and the official website, but the stuff is out there like what Shula has found.

Scott Wright's NFL Draft Countdown website listed some players on his practice reports that Bengals staff were talking with after Senior Bowl practices. Though it has to be taken with a grain of salt, he had the team talking with a interesting trio of LBs -- Jon Alston of Stanford, Brian Iwuh of Colorado, and Travis Williams of Auburn. Talk about tweeners, Iwuh has been knocked around as a better safety prospect than LB and is the heaviest of the 3 at 227. Alston is 6-0/218 and Williams is 5-11/217. Sounds like somebody might be looking into truer strong safeties than interchangeable ones, eh?

Wright also had the Bengals talking with Darryl Tapp DE Va Tech, Nick Mangold C/G Buckeye, and Davin Joseph G/T Oklahoma.

Interesting choice of players the Bengals' are talking to though nevertheless. I'm sure they are looking at tweeners for the opening at SS, as either a starter or back-up/future project.

And yes it looks as though some folks like Wilkins or Miller might be on their way out possibly, and they'll need someone with upside to replace Simmons eventually. This is how good teams like Pittsburgh and the Ravens develop a defensive roster over time, versus depending on rookies to fill all of your holes every year like the previous Bengal approach. You always want some players waiting in the wings to step up.

Mangold would be hard to pass up - giving them some depth in the interior o-line, and a replacement for Braham immediately...whereas Wilkerson is still a ? mark and Guy-chick is career backup material for now.

As I've stated before, it wouldn't suprise me if the BPA is a center or guard in the 1st or 2nd round - that they go that route.

No doubt that knee injury is looming large on Mike Brown's mind and wallet, not to mention Marvin's ability to be successful as a coach w/o his franchise QB.
