Hmmm...I thought the Bengals were going to have more cap room

The beginning of December I read an article from the

Milwaukee Journal that said the Bengals were #3 as far as having

the most cap money. It said that the Bengals were going to be

$19.9 million under the cap. And that was if the cap stayed the same

as it was in '05. Then I read that the cap is going to be $92 million in '06.

But that was all before the Palmer deal.

Anyway this article says the Bengals are #10 for teams under the salary

cap for '06 with $16 million to spend. And it`s factoring in the Palmer deal.

10 Cincinnati Bengals $16 M

This number, includes Carson Palmer's contract extension, which paid out $15 M in guaranteed, up-front money and will pay him a base of $6.75 M in 2006. Clearly the Bengals, who made the playoffs this year for the first time in 15 years, have done a nice job bringing along their young talent -- and they appear to be financially strong enough to contend for a number of years.

23 Pittsburgh Steelers $-4 M

The Steelers cap condition is not as bad as it appears. For example, all indications are that Jerome Bettis will be calling it quits at the end of this season. The Bus is scheduled to make a little over $5.35 M in base salary alone in 2006.

So even if "The Bus" does retire that means the Steelers will

still only be $1.35 million under the cap.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha !

Good find. That figure will come down a few million more once we tender our RFAs, but they should still have something like $13 million to play with. At the very least that's plenty to get multiple o-line extensions done. We may also free up some more space if we cut some marginal guys still under contract for next year.

Interesting footnote: I found it surprising how many of this year's playoff teams are all in the red. Only 4 are in good shape: us, Jax, Chicago and Seattle. NYG are just $3 million ahead, Colts and Pats are flat, and the rest of the playoff field is $1 million to $26 million over.

What is the point of hvaing a salary cap if teams can exceed it? What is the penalty for going over the cap?

No one is over it; these are the projected figures for this year. Teams that are over will have to cut players or restructure contracts before the FA period begins in March in order to get under the new cap.
