HairOnFire Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 ESPN Radio just announced that Shawn Merriman won the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Quote
The_Next_Big_Thing Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 That's totally stupid. He didn't have half the year Odell did, but more importantly, just because he had a big game ONCE this season, and is a pass rushing OLB, he gets DROY?I'll take the turnovers from Odell over his sacks any day. Quote
Stripes Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Oh well. Odell is on the better football team and will be in more Pro-Bowls than Merriman can ever imagine given his role. Quote

Merriman's timing for a big game was perfect. He dominated a team that had been undefeated right before the voting ended. In my opinion O'Dell had a better season, from start to finish, but I also think it's fair to say that his biggest impact came early. Quote
rizzy Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-d...ov=ap&type=lgns1. Merriman 28 1/2 votes2. Lofa Tatupu 16 1/2 votes3. Odell 4 Votes4. Demarcus Ware 1 voteWhat a bunch of morons that vote for this award. Quote

Demarcus Ware 1 voteWhat a bunch of morons that vote for this award. It doesn't seem all that stupid, except for the 1 DeMarcus Ware pick. He has been a lesser version of Merriman on a lesser team than Merriman's. That needs some explaining. Quote

jjakq27 Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Does anyone have a tally of tackles, sacks or INTs between the two? Quote
TIMEsteelersfan Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Don't worry about it guys... you've got a rising star in O'dell and anybody that's seen him play knows that. Just a few years ago Pittsburgh had the Defensive rookie of the year in Kendrell Bell. However, after that he could never stay healthy and he plays for KC now. Who knows what happens next year, but I expect big things from O'Dell. Not that I'm happy about it mind you. Quote
jjb10588 Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 TIMEsteelersfan you have to be one of the nicest guys ive ever had to dislike b/c of your team its nice to see a solid fan not some jerkoff Quote
HairOnFire Posted January 4, 2006 Author Report Posted January 4, 2006 http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-d...ov=ap&type=lgns1. Merriman 28 1/2 votes2. Lofa Tatupu 16 1/2 votes3. Odell 4 Votes4. Demarcus Ware 1 voteWhat a bunch of morons that vote for this award. Wow, that's a very distant 3rd place finish. I expected a much closer vote. Quote
turningpoint Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Merriman deserved it, he had about 8 good games.it;s why he is in the probowl.he is a presence on that team and will be for many years.too much bengal bias in this thread. Quote
rizzy Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Does anyone have a tally of tackles, sacks or INTs between the two? Here are the 3 stats in order, merriman, tatapoopoo, odellwell that is all screwed up, it is impossible to copy and paste stuff from the internet in here Quote
walshfan Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Doesnt matter Who deserved the award,, thats debatable.. what isnt is that the voters nominated the best d rooks and Odell was in the mix.get it? Quote

jungleman Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 the media loves the west coast right now usc, san diego that great team and the seahawks which is the team that has waited the longest to win a playoff game. Quote
jamesbrooks21 Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 It is hard to argue with the Merriman pick as bad as I would have like to have seen Odell win it. These awards are s**t anyways so I really don't pay that much attention to them. Odell is going to be really great here for a long time. That's good enough for me. Quote
buck3y3d Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Odell is a good player but he still makes a ton of mistakes. Merriman had a really good year. We all watch the Bengals and want them to do well, but the fact is that Odell was not the best rookie. On top of that, he faded big time down the stretch. Tatupu in my opinion should have won it, with Merriman second. You guys are sucking the kool-aid too hard on Odell. I think he'll be a probowler someday, but he wasn't ROY. To be mentioned for the award is still an honor though and it was well deserved. Quote
DontPushMe Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Why is anyone suprised over this? Merriman is in the pro bowl and had a huge game against the then undefeated colts, then got sucked off by the media for a few weeks. Most of these guys that voted probly only saw a few games of each player, and let the hype do the rest of it. Also, remember, Odell plays for a defense that is straight up bad. Hard to get voted defensive rookie of the year when your team is giving up 30 points a game and is getting run all over.Ware getting a vote is definitly confusing though. Probly a cowboys fan. Quote
UofLnMU Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 I'm an autograph collector, and last year George Rogers was signing at the GA Sports HOF. Pat Swilling was supposed to be there, but was a no show. I had a Gamecock mini and a Saints mini, and asked Rogers to sign both, since I didn't have much else use for a Saints mini helmet. I love to get inscriptions on them, and asked Rogers to inscribe the Saints mini "#1 Overall Pick." He said, "I'll do you one better and put "1981 ROY" on it. I had a friend over who looked over some of my autographs...and he said, "Rookie of the Year? They have that in football?"To make a short story long, you won't remember who won this year's award in 2007. I remember Kendrell's win because he beat Justin Smith (a fella I went to school with in addition to being a Bengal). I couldn't tell you ANYONE else who has been ROY...so who cares.... Quote

I venture to say that the majority of the people reponding to this thread have never even seen Merriman play. Quote
walshfan Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Ive seen him play 3 times and he's a monster..... Quote
Jet23 Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Ive seen him play 3 times and he's a monster.....Yup. Not only is he a Pro Bowler, he is a PERENNIAL Pro Bowler. Being a fan is one thing, but come on people! Quote
