Lions place two LBs on injured reserve

NFL.com wire reports

DETROIT (Dec. 16, 2005) -- The Detroit Lions placed linebackers Boss Bailey and Earl Holmes on injured reserve, finishing them for the season.

Bailey, who has an ankle injury, missed all of 2004. He's third on the team in tackles this season with 75 in 11 games.

Holmes, who has a bad knee, started 10 games this season and was second in tackles with 83. He also forced two fumbles.

The Lions added linebacker Matt Grootegoed and receiver Glenn Martinez from the practice squad.

Boss Bailey didn't play last week. But Holmes did and also Donte Curry who is listed as questionable. The Lions LB corp has been decimated by injuries this year and it is easily the weakest part of the defense right now. The Bengals should work to exploit the LBs as much as possible.

In watching the Lions defense in the 1st half of last week's Sunday night game, their obvious strength is their 4 man rush. Shaun Rogers is virtually impossible for 1 blocker to keep out of the backfield on a bullrush. The rest of the DT rotation is also excellent in Big Daddy, Marcus Bell, Shaun Cody, and Cory Redding switching to inside off end. They have a fierce combination of power, size, and short area quickness in DE James Hall who on any given pass play can pulverize a QB in a hurry. They bring a pass rush specialist in Kalimba Edwards in at DE on passing downs and switched Hall from RDE to LDE.

The No Huddle is the best tactic the Bengals can use offensively to offset the Lions solid D-line. The more the DT opposite Rogers and the DE opposite Hall is worn down during a series, the easier it will be for the Bengals to double Rogers and Hall.

The Lions have a bad record and have had a lot of tumult this year. But don't think they can't give the Bengals a game. The Lions have lost 4 games to playoff teams this year by 6 points or less and the 6-point loss was to the Bears in OT. The others were a 5 pt loss to Vikes, 4 pt loss to Bucs, and 1 pt loss to Panthers. The Lions could just as easily be 8-5 going into this game as they are 4-9. And Dick Jauron has a whole lot to prove this game against a team that he would enjoy proving it against.

I agree, I don't think it will be a walk in the park. Too bad Chris Perry is out, because he would be perfect for exploiting the Lions' weakness at LB Oh, well. JJ should have an opportunity to catch a few balls, tho. Given their d-line I think he and Rudi will get a good dose of dump-offs. That said, while the Lions have been strong against the pass -- they have absolutely sucked vs. the run. Their pass D is No. 10, their rush D No. 26. My game plan looks something like this: Rudi, Rudi, Rudi, JJ, Rudi, Rudi, Rudi, JJ, Rudi...well, you get the idea.

the Broncos linebacking corps is fastest in the league bar none but Boss Bailey may be the fastest individual to play the postiion.. guy runs a 4.45 forty which puts him atop the league for lb's in terms of speed.

The Lions will miss that enormously come Sunday..

Look for the Lions to go with 5 db's and Rudi to carry 30 times for well over 100 yards...

But the Bengals still can't be bashful about airing it out when the op is there, not that they've been reluctant in that regard all year. Samkon Gado gashed the Lions D for some 170 yds on the ground and yet the Pack only put up 13 pts.

I would say a healthy dose of Rudi will open up the longball to either Chad or Housh a few times this game depending on who McQuarters will try to hang with and whether or not the O-line can withstand the pass rush long enough. The only way it wouldn't is if the Lions stop the run well enough with 7 that they don't have to bring one safety up and leave the other high and dry to try to cover the sidelines deep from the middle of the field.

After the off game Carson had last week, I'd be surprised if he doesn't seize every op he gets off the audible to throw. I'd expect both Chad and Housh to get lots of quick hitters, especially where there's cushion.
