HoosierCat
Marvin's Bengals has shown they will back off any bid for any player if the costs don't justify the purchase.True -- but that's precisely the point. When you're, say, 6-10, it's difficult to justify dropping "Corey Simon money" on a single player; it's too much to commit to one guy on a team that likely has many holes in need of filling. However, when you're 10-6 and lacking just a key piece here or there, suddenly that "overpriced" deal makes a lot more sense. Kirkendall
However, when you're 10-6 and lacking just a key piece here or there, suddenly that "overpriced" deal makes a lot more sense.I'm still not fond of that argument. I think it takes away from depth at other positions. And it's been since the Griffey deal in the Reds that's cause me to believe that. I know I know, it's a different beast, but I still believe the kids on our defense will contribute within the next 2-years than anything we'll buy down the road.Anyway, it's incredibly rare to see a guy, that's performing at a high level to fall onto the free market anymore (so it seems). Most are old guys, injury risks, draft busts, or locker room problems. It's rare to see a team let a big time guy go anyway...(where's the banter )

Well, I'd argue that the Griffey deal was far more of a dumb reach by a 6-10 style team than a 10-6 team looking for a final piece. But in any event I don't think the Bengals have huge depth issues right now; certainly none that would be impacted by setting $6-8 million out of $24 million aside. The real questions in my mind are, will there be someone worth the coin available, and if so, will the front office break with its own past and call out the Brinks truck?A more pressing question at the moment might be, what about this year? We have, what, 3 weeks left in December and still have circa $4 million in cap space. That should be enough to give a nice fat extension to Eric Steinbach... ckj414
Couldn't be further from the truth! His knack on the line is stopping the run... and if you look on TB forums, they attribure their good rushing defense almost entirely to him. They are afraid though that they won't be able to re-sign him for whatever reason... so since that's what we need... why not?Well then maybe you're on to something. The Bengals need someone on the interior, badly.
ckj414
I disagree that the Bengals defense won't improve in 2006 even if they don't sign ANYONE. The young players they have may well continue to improve. Also, I suspect we'll surprise someone (just like the last three or four years) and draft someone who really helps us!Hope they do - but defensive tackles are a fickle bunch. Got to try to find someone on the first day of the draft for sure.1st priority this offseason, get the key guys on the OL locked up long term. 2nd priority, get the best DT available.
