TRYOUTS: The Bengals held tryouts for tight ends John Owens (Notre Dame) and Darnell Sanders (Ohio State) this week at Paul Brown Stadium.

Offensive tackle Stacy Andrews also was spotted working out under the guidance of defensive line coach Jay Hayes and defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan.

Andrews, a second-year player, is 6 feet 7, 350 pounds, and there is word the Bengals want to see what he could do as a defensive tackle.

1st thought: Not a bad idea IMHO...but a little late in the day to start tinkering now. Could bear some fruit down the road (i.e. next year).

2nd thought: that pounding sound you hear are the nails being driven into Matthais Askew's coffin.

5th thought: We know what position they're drafting at next year.

6th thought: They're hoping the secondary can come up big for the rest of the year, cuz the line sure ain't getting anything done.

Great find! Hell yes put him in, Its not complicated the position. Just get low and push. Dear lrod try it. Our D line is getting bitched slapped so much they might not make it the rest of the year. I remeber the job chicago did on them. They got banged up, from then on they have been getting beat on. First their not that good but at this rate can all four starters make it through the whole year.

Whats this say about Askew, dude we busted on this pick and the KW pick. why didnt we pick freakin Whitten!

On my 5th post I did on this sight, I spoke about Stacy as a DT. In the board of directors meeting with the football God Marvin I did some consulting with Marvin About this very thing, I am thrilled he took my adivice ( OK I HAD A DREAM ) :P !! All laughs aside, can you vision this. Stacy and S. smith DT " LOOK OUT E. JAMES " next Sunday and the week after, Willie and company. All we ever had to beat was the run and everyone knows that if we had done that we would be 9-0. Also set Pollack and bring on Miller, maybe next year Pollack will be a little better. Our run game, set our TE and bring out Ghent at TE & FB, bring out Lurchy we all know he can run the ball and wear a D down, we would have Johnson & Johnson, Perry on the out side, in the second half we would control the run game our way. Stacy & Smith would both need doubled can't you just see what Odell & L. Johnson would do if the O line is busy with GASS, Geathers, Andrews, Smith & Smith. :D:D:D

 Why the hell aren't I a GM. I along with Many other bengalszone members brought this up a long time ago. I want compensated for this move.

Here, have a cookie :eat:

But yeah, it has been suggested. And any time the Bengals start doing something radical with personnel that the fans have suggested (not that I'm saying they are doing it because fans suggested it) I think you can catch a whiff of desperation.

Like I alluded to in my initial post, I see this as a signal that they have lost all faith in Askew, whether because of injury, attitude, ability, who knows? But now they are looking at the second half of the season and very likely at least one playoff game...and without Askew they are a DT short. They have Smith, Thornton, and Robinson (himself a converted DE) and then a bunch of DE/DT types in Clemons, Geathers, and Powell.

Based on what we've seen so far, Geathers just isn't effective at DT. Thornton and Smith are average, with occasional good days and slightly more occasional bad days. Powell is a trooper, but he's the K2 of the line: versatile player who's a solid backup but not starting-caliber. And while both Clemons and Robinson are both decent players they are, in NFL years, antiques...and older players tend to run down as the season goes on; when you're 32, 33, you don't bounce back the way you did 10 years before.

If they could add Stacy to the rotation, even just as a short yardage, goal-line specialist, that would help. But like I said I think it's a bit late in the game...

I'm a bit worried about what it suggests about their faith in Andrews. Does anyone think thaty they feel he's just not sticking as an O Lineman? He's been inactive just as often as Askew this year. The coaches said at the beginning of the season that they wouldn't consider the switch because they didn't want to confuse him or interrupt his development on the Oline. Thing is, I don't think anyone will argue that a potential top OT is more valuable than DT. It feels like a downgrade to me. Any thoughts?

:chef::drool: MMMMMM Cookies

I saw a Pollack comment so I figured I'd brign this up in this thread. I want Pollack back at DE, really, really bad. I think the guy wqould be a stud at that position. he just looks lost out there as a LB.

I think he's just been low man on the o-line totem pole, and with Koo playing so well in spot duty and the line -- outside of center -- having generally stayed healthy...there's been no big need to have him active. If he could be effective as a DT, even in just spot duty, I think that would actually increase his chances of suiting up on game day. But I think that's a very big if.

Bingo! It smacks of novelty..."hey, what do we have to lose." Despite the lack of glamour of the interior d-line I think there actually is some skill involved there, espectially in a 4-3 where you're not just supposed to occupy, but also to make tackles on the RB. Sadly, there's probably some truth to the sentiment that he couldn't be any worse. It seemed to me that Smith was used much more often last week vs. the Ravens -- was that just me or did anybody else notice that?

I doubt Stacy the Giant has the Inner Monster necessary for DT.

He's got some nimble feet though to go with all that heft. So who knows? Maybe it's just for goal line D.

If they're looking to add a DT, plucking one off a practice squad would seem to be the better course. It was about this time last year (a little earlier) that the Bengals added Shaun Smith when he got waived from the Saints and signed the since long-gone Terrance Martin.

They should be concerned about just having a 3-man rotation of true DTs in Robinson, Thornton, and Smith if for no other reason than if one of the starters gets injured. The DEs like Jumpy Jr., Big Duane, and Carl Plowed just give up too much strength inside to add much to the DT rotation.

Askew looks more like a lost cause with each passing week, for whatever reason. But maybe Marvin is just pulling back on the reins until the stretch run. :)

That was my thought too. He may have the strength and size... but so do a lot of people not in the NFL. He certainly has more strength and size than anyone else on the team... so the position is clearly not simply a matter of a physical presence standing there, as much as it is about technique, and primarily heart.

You must have sheer will to overpower another huge man in the middle trying to get to a QB or RB over and over again as the game goes on. I hope it works out great... but my thought is, he's just a big strong monster... not so much a football player.

I think we're all looking too far into this. What if they're doing that to put pressure on JT and co.? I don't think you can just throw someone into an entirely different position, especially someone who's barely played any football. I doubt we'll even see him as DT on the field, and if we do, maybe in a goal line situation, but that's it.
