Stripes
The college football regular season is just less than halfway over, and I thought I'd have a look at what I've gathered so far.The best five teams in the country are, in my opinion:1.) Southern California2.) Texas3.) Georgia4.) Virginia Tech5.) Penn State (wow! )The Big Ten Conference was billed as the best in the nation this year by most preseason pundits, but as of yet, hasn't quited lived up to that hype. Perennial Big Ten powers have fallen hard and fast, with the Wolverines and Boilermakers at 3-3, the Buckeyes and Hawkeyes at 3-2, and the leader being none other than 6-0 Penn State. This conference was expected to be more competitive that usualy, and so far that has proven true. Still, very few people expected to see the Nittany Lions on top this late in the season, or even the Michigan State Spartans to be lurking near behind. The toughest looking conference this year has been the South Eastern Conference. Georgia, Florida, and Lousiana State all look like title contenders, with Georgia on top of the bunch. The Atlantic Coast Conference standings look about as one would expect. Virginia Tech and Florida State lead the way, with the Hurricanes one step behind. The Big East also hasn't had many surprises yet, except perhaps the terrible start by the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Lousiville Cardinals look poised to take that conference. The Big Twelve has looked weak all around this year, except the team on top in the Texas Longhorns. The PAC 10 has been stronger than expected, with USC leading the way and California and UCLA putting up strong seasons as well.If I had to pick the national championship game based on what I've seen this year so far, I would say Longhorns over Trojans. San Antonio Bengal
Of course the SEC is the toughest and most brutal. The Big 12 is soft. Oklahoma is down. Texas A&M is nowhere near pre-season expectations. Texas is a powerhouse, and Texas Tech has been good (and lucky), but the rest of the conference is nice and mediocre. The Big 10 is totally messed up. There's no other way to describe it. The Pac-10 is USC and the stepchildren. The Big East and the ACC have some good teams, but on from top to bottom, the best on out there is the SEC even when you count Kentucky! Even Vandy is having a good season for them. redsbengalsbucks
Tough divisions should be the ones where it is tough to go undefeated in.The Big Ten has Wisconsin, Penn State, OSU, MU, Minnesota, Michigan State and Northwestern all capable of beating each other, other than Georgia, Florida and LSU does the SEC have 4 other teams that can come in and knock off the rest? NO WAYThe Big 12 has been over rated for years, look at the Bowl record recently, look at the bottom dwellers of that division, the top team, Texas, this year has played exactly one tough team and almost lost the game. The PAC 10 looks to be as tough this year as it has in a while from top to bottom. The National Champion will not come out of the Big Ten this year as was predicted but that has nothing to do with how tough a division is, actually just the opposite is true for most teams that are able to make it thru a season undefeated. Most undefeated teams are not tested more than twice in a season by a team that is supposed to play them and have a chance at winning. The Big Ten conference is not like that there are always 5-8 teams that could walk in to the league leaders own house and pull off the upset. Most other conferences have fluff teams that fill out the bottom have of thier divisions and will never compete with the big boys. The BIG TEN is definitely the toughest division in football this year(most competitive) as is the case most seasons.
