hottub
Guys,Today in Boston they held a parade and rally for the New England Patriots. I didn't go, or see it live - I had a meeting - but I just saw the television rebroadcast. It was incredible. According to the Boston Globe, 1.5 million people showed up! Everything downtown must have come to a complete standstill. People started showing up at 8 am, and the team didn't arrive until like 1:30 pm. And the city didn't put out any portible toilets or anything. Nevertheless, everybody was amazingly happy - thrilled, even overjoyed! It was just unbelievable.I write this not to brag - especially since this isn't my team - but to share. Somebody ought to get a tape of that celebration, tie Mike Brown into a chair, and make him watch it over and over. I truly believe that Bob Kraft, owner of the Patriots, will do anything he can to win again, and a big part of the reason is the celebration he received in 2002 and now today. How else can you make 1.5 million people (at least) absolutely love you? Here is a link to a story about the celebration. There are probably lots of articles - I just grabbed the first one to come up in google. This one mentions Bill Bellichick's attempt at dancing - one of the funniest things I've seen in months! Kirkendall
Thing about Bostonians that piss me off is their bitching and moaning with the Red Sox. Even though they've won the last two of three NFL Titles, they still bitch and complain about not having a World Series. The Belichick dance was awful. But you're right, it was an amazing scene from the clips I saw on SportsCenter..

The Bengals had a great turn around, spring training hasn't even started, and I'm already bitching about the Reds. I guess I'll finally be totally happy when we have back to back World Series and Superbowl wins ...... That will most likely be approximately 24hrs after hell freezes over. Kirkendall
I can't get on them for compaining about the Sox. The Bengals had a great turn around, spring training hasn't even started, and I'm already bitching about the Reds. They have a winner and it's Yankees this and Yankees that. Note to BoSox fans - Get over it, you'll never win another post season game. We've had a winner on neither team since the 1999 Reds and before then it was '95. So we are mad that our teams are winning, which makes sense.Boston is also now another reason why MLB will never be partial to smaller market teams. This was the time that all teams could have united against the Evil Empire, yet like the Cubs they throw mega bucks into their teams which is the virus that run rampant on baseball...This isn't about football is it? My bad fellas, got a little over board on this one. Jam 31 - I'm still not tired of seeing Natasha (sp?)...

kevnz
Yeah, those New Englanders really know how to celebrate championships....Nevermind the fact that someone was killed by their celebrations the night before...what a load of s**t. I don't mind the patriots...I hate Boston fans in all sports...They suck.
hottub
It really is odd the way Boston loves and hates the Sox. Going into Game 7 against the Yankees last year, every Sox fan I talked to wanted to win, but expected to lose. When it actually happened, it was like a wake around here.On the hand, during the post-game celebration at the Super Bowl, New Englander fans in the stands supposedly started doing the "Yankees Suck" chant! That amazed me: How could anyone could even think about the Yankees at a time like that? Maybe it's a little like Ohio State-Michigan. I didn't attend OSU, but I once dated a grad student who got us tickets to every home game for a whole season. The most amazing thing was how, no matter who they were playing that week, the overriding theme remained the same" "Beat Michigan!".Oh well. If the Sox ever do beat the Yankees and go one to win the World Series, I predict two things:1) there will be complete chaos in Boston, and2) Bostonians will quickly find something else to complain about. As for the payroll wars: it's true that the Sox spend a lot of money - about $104,873,607, according to this - but they kind of have to, since they're in the same division as the Yankees. Even so, they still spent about $75,000,000 less than the Yankees last year - a difference greater than the total payroll of the Cincinnati Reds!On the other hand, look at the Florida Marlins. They spent just a smidge less than the Reds, but today they are World Champs! So, it's not all about the money - just mostly.

Good point hottub. Kinda gives the small markets hope. I was overjoyed that the Marlins sent the N.Y. "Spankies" home with their hats in their hands last year. I hate 'em, and George too.I just wish Carolina could have done the same to the Pats. I find it funny that the "Genuis" was only able to eek out a 3 point win. Didn't even cover the spread by God! Genius my ass. He's average. If he wasn't he'd have done more with the Brownies. Carolina should have won that game. I'll get over it in a few weeks I suppose. Sorry Billy but I must respectfully disagree, I think he learned from his mistakes first committed in Cleveland and then won a superbowl with Deion Branch, David Givens, and Antowain frickin Smith at receiver and runningbackThat my friend is GENIUS!!Two Superbowl victories by field goals, i dont understand it, but he gets it done
Kirkendall
Plus he coached the team with the second longest winning streak in NFL history. He had 40+ guys injured -- meaning on the IR or missed a game due to injury -- throughout the season. Plus in Cleveland he had Testaverde as the QB, which has proven in New York he's not a winner, had Leroy Hoard as the RB, and in 1994 -- the year he took the Browns to the AFC Divisional Playoff game -- he had the best ranked defense in the NFL. All NFL coaches go through a stint of learning how to coach in the NFL, such as Vermeils first few seasons in Philly, Tom Landry in Dallas, Bill Walsh; all had rough seasons at the beginning of their head coaching careers. Plus Cleveland is the worst city in America so I have mass empathy for Belichick during that time.
hottub
I certainly agree with you regarding Bellichick in Cleveland. That was a catastrophe so bad that even Cleveland barely deserved it. On the other hand, 15 games in a row, 2 Lombardi’s in 3 years...?Maybe Idiot Savant is a better description. Or maybe nerd (in the interest of full disclosure, I'm admit that I'm a nerd too). Either way, now he has a team that believes what he believes: get a lead and hold it. I believe he truly doesn't care if he wins by 1 point or 31 points... and would rather win by fewer points if it means less risk of turnovers. That's what makes Brady a better fit than Bledsoe was. Brady is willing to check down or throw it away rather than gamble when they don't have to. Brady, with his cannon arm, always wanted to make the big play.Still, if it would make it easier for you to take, remember that they could have had:1) 3 more points from the missed field goal2) 3 more points from the blocked field goal3) shouldn't have squib kicked at the end of the half (gave the Panthers an easy 3 points)4) Ty Law's fumble recovery called a fumble recovery instead of an incomplete pass. That fumble might well have gone for a TD.Those, if they had gone the other way, would have added about 16 points to the margin of victory. Of course, if we're going that, we'd have to give the Panthers the two PAT points that that they lost by going for 2 twice. The net result would be 14 more points for the Patriots. BengalszoneBilly
Okay we need perspective here.Bill Walsh was a genius. So to a lesser degree was Tom Landry. Belichick couldn't carry their playbooks.Belichick merely got lucky...twice. They got practically every call in the game, and still only win by three? That ain't no genius. Sorry to have to break the news to ya'. Without Brady, and his pass protection/holding specialists, he'd still be nothin'. But not to worry, next year they will be talking about Marvin, and asking why the Pats have pulled a boner along the lines Tampa Bay did this year. And as far as all the talk in the press about this dynasty, well dynasty my eye. Those guys are starting to sound like Ted Turner waxing poetically about his Braves. Yeah. Some dynasty. Time will tell.I do appreciate the Pats not covering the spread they were easily supposed to make. Won me $50 in the office pool.Belichick...Genius... Thanks guys, I need a laugh at work today!! But did you have to take a pot shot at the Braves??? They are a dynasty...Just got one World Series to their name (hell, at least they did win one after making it to all of those championships...unlike say the Bills...sorry couldn't resist)The Pat's had so many bulls**t calls go their way, or not get called in the game it wasn't funny....I mean the Pats recievers mugged the Panthers DBs and only had one offensive pass interferance call??? What the? I can't count how many times someone on the Pats oline held the Panthers Dline...It made me sick...But I told everyone before the game that the Pats were gonna get every call their way...But to show you the kinda class the Panthers had they didn't complain, hell they didn't even want any celebrations like every other losing team gets...That's hardcore....But the NFL didn't want the Lombardi trophy heading down south, it's that simple. But yeah, the PAt's will do what they did last year and not make the playoffs...You know, dynasties don't miss the playoffs......That's why I dislike all this dynasty talk, they didn't even make the playoffs in 2002...Dynasties always threaten.... Kirkendall
Belichick compared to todays standard of coaching, I'll give him the genious title for that. Comparing to coaching of yesterday, maybe not but his career isn't finished either.

That's just as presumptious as the Dallas CowSkanks calling themselves the same thing. NOBODY is America's team. And don't give me the excuse all their games are televised nationwide. Cubbie do the same thing, yet they arent so presumptious. I blame Atlanta's decision to do this on that pompus ass Ted Turner. And don't get me wrong. I don't hate the Braves, (well maybe that tomahawk chop/chant) but they have looked awful silly with all the division championships, and trips to the World Series, and only one title to show for it. kevnz
My final Belicheck rant....It's his fricking players!!!!Damn, he doesn't even have final say on the personel brought in...That's the reason Parcells left the Pats...Yeah he's pretty good at scheming, but you have to give the Front Office some love...Belicheck get's all the glory for being in a good organization. I mean Kraft didn't trust Parcells to make those kind of decisions, why the hell should he trust Bill "I nearly destroyed football in Cleveland" Belicheck...Nobody in the press talks about that...Yeah, I understand that he had to learn how to be a head coach....But come on he's not the second coming Lombardi or anything....I mean I can handle the Brady-Montana comparisons better than all this Belicheck fluff the media throws out...Hey, I never would call the Braves America's team...But they are the team of the South....What can I say, I'm a good ole boy till I die. BengalszoneBilly
Hey, I never would call the Braves America's team...But they are the team of the South....What can I say, I'm a good ole boy till I die.The team of the Southeastern seaboard without a doubt. Now that Florida has the Marlins, I don't think they'd appreciate that statement. I love that area of our country, and miss it so much. I have family that lives in Stone Mountain Georgia. Had a great time in underground Atlanta. What a party that was! Oh, and thanks for that little tidbit about Genius boy not being considered genius enough in his own organization to pick his own people. That's a real laugher. And Brady does deserve the Montana comparisons. He, and he alone is making Belichick look good.
chrishcovga
Genius or not, the New England Patriots are the "proof in the pudding" when it comes to a front office making the necessary deals to give a head coach the best players possible to win with. It took us 13 years to accomplish this.As for the Braves, i live in georgia... and to be honest with you,i've grown about as tired of them as any one person could be.They are the shining example of " the good 'ol boy" syndrome. Bobby Cox will never be fired, and the stadium will never sell out a home game. Why should it.. they broadcast their games on every cable and satellite network. Why go to see them blow it again come october for $ 40.oo a ticket when i can watch a re-run of diehard. Kirkendall
There's a lot of references of how the players are extension of the coaches, and the coaches are the extension of the players. This is the same romance as the players with Walsh and vice versa. Time will tell if Belichick will be the Shula/Walsh of this generation or if he'll be the Seifert (failing after leaving the comferts of SF). Regardless, his chapter is yet to be finished so for us to already close the book for him is still premature.

Well, I think what the Braves need is a few good years of losing again....That'll fix things, Cox would retire(I'm sorry, you can't fire someone that wins all the time, even if they can't win the big one. Besides, a couple of losing seasons is good for the soul...Plus it kicks the fair weather fans ass....But then, most Baseball games don't sell out...it's boring...Oh well, at least they ain't the reds....
