JaxonFord87 Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 Here I registered so nobody else had to.Cowart's status iffy for Bengals gameBY DON SEEHOLZERPioneer PressThe Vikings' defense played pretty well, for starters, in Sunday's opening 24-13 loss to Tampa Bay, but it could be without one of its veteran leaders this week.Middle linebacker Sam Cowart suffered a strained left calf near the end of the game and his status for Sunday's game at Cincinnati is uncertain."My calf is a little sore, but I should be fine," Cowart said Monday. "It feels a lot better than it did yesterday."Coach Mike Tice said Cowart is day to day and that the team will monitor his progress during the week to determine whether he will ready be Sunday. If he's not, Tice said the preliminary plan is to start Rod Davis in Cowart's place and not move starting weak-side linebacker E.J. Henderson back to the middle."It's like offensive linemen," Tice said. "I'd rather have a swing guy that can play all five spots or four spots instead of flipping guys all around."Davis had a strong preseason for the Vikings, but he was beaten for a 23-yard touchdown pass by Tampa Bay tight end Alex Smith on his first play after replacing Cowart.Defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell said he could have helped Davis out by calling a different coverage on that play and that the Vikings won't have to change anything they do if he starts this week.Cowart, asked if he thinks he'll be able to start at Cincinnati, said, "Hopefully. That's the plan."Bennett still No. 1: Tice said he started Moe Williams at running back against Tampa Bay in part to let Michael Bennett settle down. But Tice said Bennett will start against Cincinnati."Mike will start, then Moe will be the spell guy and Moe will take third downs for us," Tice said. "That would be the ideal for me right now is to have a guy who's the starter and he comes out when he needs a breather. That would be as good as we can get it. We haven't had it that way for a while."Bennett rushed for minus-1 yard on six carries Sunday, but the Vikings managed just 26 yards on 16 carries as a team and Tice said there weren't a lot of holes for any of his backs."Looking at it, there wasn't much there," he said. "Anything they were going to make yesterday, they were going to make on their own."Mewelde Moore didn't get any carries against the Buccaneers, returning three kickoffs for 66 yards before being leg whipped and aggravating his sprained left ankle.Moore, asked if he expects to be ready for Sunday, said, "I'm not 100 percent, but I'm playing."Day in court: All-pro defensive tackle Kevin Williams has a court date in Minnetonka today to face charges of domestic violence stemming from an Aug. 28 arrest.Williams was charged with fifth-degree domestic assault, a misdemeanor, after his wife, Tasha, called 911 during an early morning altercation at their home.Williams' attorney, Joseph Tamburino, said today's appearance is strictly procedural, for the purpose of entering a plea and setting a future court date."He'll be pleading not guilty," Tamburino said. "Mr. Williams denies all the accusations."Alive and kicking: Rookie punter Chris Kluwe doesn't have to worry about losing his job this week after averaging 54.3 yards on four kicks in his Vikings debut."I think the only one on a week-to-week basis around here is me," Tice cracked.Kluwe's opening performance was the second-best single-game punting effort in team history, behind only a 55.8-yard day by Mitch Berger in 1998.Briefly: Center Matt Birk will have surgery today in New York to repair a partially torn labrum in his left hip.• Ralph Brown replaced Brian Williams at nickel back in the third quarter Sunday, but Tice said Williams will return in that role this week.
