Kirkendall
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A lawyer for suspended Ohio State tailback Maurice Clarett said Clarett wants to play for the Buckeyes next season, even if he wins a lawsuit that would let him enter the NFL draft. "Maurice intends and wants to be the running back for OSU," attorney Percy Squire said Thursday. "He doesn't want to go into the NFL (next season). His overwhelming preference is to go back to playing with his buddies." However, Squire said he is not sure if Ohio State and the NCAA will extend Clarett's suspension into next season. The university has not yet asked the NCAA to reinstate Clarett, athletic director Andy Geiger said. He must meet school conditions such as making academic progress and donating "thousands of dollars" to charity to make up for the benefits. Clarett, who in 2002 helped Ohio State win the national championship, will be allowed to work out with the Buckeyes when winter conditioning drills begin next week, Geiger said. He's been barred from team workouts since his suspension was announced Sept. 10. "He was not doing any activity with the team before, but I think coach (Jim Tressel) and I feel that is an important step to get him back," Geiger said. "If he wants to be a part of it, he needs to be in shape."Clarett is asking a federal judge in New York to throw out a rule that prevents players from entering the draft until they have been out of high school for three years. Under that rule, Clarett, a sophomore, would have to wait until the end of next season to become eligible for the draft. U.S. District Judge Shira A. Scheindlin said she hopes to rule on the case by Feb. 1. On Wednesday, Clarett, accused of lying on a police report, avoided a criminal record by pleading guilty to a lesser charge that carries no jail time. He was fined $100 on a charge of failure to aid a law enforcement officer. Clarett was accused of filing a campus police report that exaggerated the value of items stolen from a dealership car he borrowed in April. Kirkendall
YES! That makes me sick. Who does this little fetus think he is? I mean, he's going to become another great prospect paying for 9 kids at home while working at Pizza Hut. Horrible story of a career gone bad in the making and it pains me because of his youth and potential.
BengalszoneBilly
What do you bet this young and talented person doesn't have a father figure in his life that should be putting a boot in his a$$ right now, and straightening him out?? Moreover it's a sad statement of the erosion of the family in this country, regardless of race and financial status.
