andybren Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Street credibility? By making overpriced deals for players who don't live up to expectations (Sapp, Vincent) or who underwelm the market (Sharper, Boulware)? And then being unable to re-sign current talent (Rudi, TJ)? No thanks. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 overpriced deals for players who don't live up to expectations----John Thorton Quote
walshfan Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 the idea is to have a tackle rotation where you dont lose a step when they rotate..Langston Moore and Mathias Askew seem to make us vulnerable when they play. They're backups right now in case of injury ( which Askew seems to be all the time)A rotation of Williams, JT and Simon would be a huge upgrade.. Make him a good offer.. Marvin wont break the bank you know that.. ( cut some veteran dead weight) and see if he's intterested.. If not so be it..... Quote
Dadraftnick Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 This team is playing like $h!t you have to something to wake everbody up.Will Simon do it I dont know.Simon could make the D something special and make the guys start looking over their shoulders. On the other hand if he comes in with a Dillon (me First) attitude it could take them over the edge the other way and have the team start looking like its coached by Shula instead of Marvin.I would not worry about it anyway .As Bengal fans we get teased like this several times every year.I still think not getting Sapp kinda sent a message to the players that the head office(Mike Brown) was not really that serious about winning.Regardless of what Sapp did last year he would have an improvement over what we had.I would not worry about Simon Mike Brown will never cough up the money for him anyway. It will be like it always is a guy uses us to get his price up and takes less to pay for another team. The only kind of free agent we can get is a third tier Duane Clemmons, Kim Herring ..ect. type. Because, nobody else really wants them. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Mort lists the Bengals as the top team involved for the Simon Running Quote
HoosierCat Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Per Hobson, Marvin did not rule out pursuing Simon, but the bengals appear content to see how the market shakes out (my take: forget it).Right now my $$$ is on the Giants. Quote
Jonboat Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Sounds like Cleveland may be in the running also, Sean Mccelland had a tidbit in the paper today that they may have a an interest in Simon. I know the SS position is a concern now but I could see where a DL the caliber of Simon could help our secondary, getting pressure on the QB more consistently would take some pressure off them. Is it possible to afford him & a safety since Warrick is reportedly cut ? I'd love to get him but I'm not holding my breath we've been down this road before! GO BENGALS!!! Jonboat Quote
Sox Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 I'd love to have him signed.I suspect the Ravens may not make a play. They have some cap room, but Ray Lewis and Ed Reed want their contracts redone. Quote
HoosierCat Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 I think we can pretty much close the door on Simon. Between Olahete and Navies, the Bengals just chewed up $1.08 million in salary and cap space, minimum (minimum NFL salary for these guys, based on their experience level, is $540k per). Quote
bengalindian Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Sign him for the league minimum. I'll talk him into it. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Why did we sing Hannibal Navies!? Waste of money he sucks! The Bengals are again retarded for not making a move that could potentially solve there problem for stopping the run. Here is what the Bengals should do: Cut John Thorton cause he is a huge waste of salary cap money, and he sucks. That would free up so much room for Simon. Plus with Pdub gone we should have even more room. I am sick of this crap that we are so poor and can only pay Minimum salaries. There are other teams out there that have less money than us and they sign big time players to big time contracts who do very well. We are not the Patriots! Players wont take Paycuts to play here, so we just need pay the man what he wants! We are retarded for passsing on him. Quote
bengalindian Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 I thought cutting JT would save the Bengals no money. Correct me if I'm wrong. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Well he would free up some money. He signed a pretty lucrative contract. Quote
bengalindian Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 OK. You know how much...is it significant enough to have room to sign Simon AND keep room next year to re-sign some players who's contracts are up? Quote
andybren Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 According to Hobson, Simon passed on a deal with Baltimore for $5 million a year. Does anybody here actually believe Mike Brown is going to top that? Quote
andybren Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 FYI, regarding Thornton's contract...3/8/2003 - 3-8-03, 7:20 p.m.BY GEOFF HOBSONNew Bengals defensive tackle John Thornton knows the heat is on. Suddenly, he’s a Main Street name with a Wall Street bank account. And, it’s not because Bengals President Mike Brown thought Thornton deserved $5 million up front for just 35 NFL starts. Or that Katie Blackburn thought Thornton’s $3.7 million average or so was cheaper than matching Takeo Spikes’ offer in Buffalo even though he’s never had six sacks in a season. Or that Troy Blackburn thought his $2 million or so salary cap count this year was doable. No, Thornton got $22.5 million over six years for one reason and it’s because Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis thought the 26-year-old former Titan is on the verge of breaking out. The_Next_Big_Thing Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Well he would free up some money. He signed a pretty lucrative contract. Yes, but cutting him would make his signing bonus due NOW, thus gaining almost nothing this year. Sure, we could put half of it off until next season's cap, but uh that's a bad way to go, ask San Fran.Besides, if the dude won't take $5 mil a year, he can go play for someone who isn't stupid. Spain Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Chop chop, off with the head, bring on Simon! Quote

Spain Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 We are going to axe herring and Webster to to fit him in! Quote

Thornton's $5 mill signing bonus on a 6 yr deal would still leave almost $1 mill of a cap hit if he were cut and the Bengals ate it all this year based on his $2.5 mill salary and a SB cap structure spread evenly over the 6 years. If they wanted, they could push $2.5 mill in dead money into next year and come out with about $1.7 mill less in cap this year because they'd still have to eat 1/6 of the SB this year.I agree that pushing dead money can cause big problems, but I say they should bid for Simon as high as they can factoring in cuts of Thornton, Reggie Kelley, and 3 RFAs. I doubt that would give them enough but my motto is....WIN NOW Quote
Spain Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Your right this deal can get done! I dont ike dead money but I think we should in this case. The affects will be felt next year! Quote
derekshank Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Man, I hope the Dolphins hurry up and sign him. This conversation is one of the most repetitive I've seen in a while. Quote
schweinhart Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Well, Shankster, you should of sat in on last year's nauseating saga about Darryl Gardener. The mere mention of that name is enough to make me want to blow chunks. DT looks better situated than the past 2 years because B-Rob looks like he'll command the doubles. Thornton does all right but it would be much better if had more impact than he does. I take Simon in a heartbeat over Thornton.I think Brez likes Shaun Smith, or at least I hope, because the Bengals need the best DT rotation they can muster. Askew is looking better this pre-season than last.I think the Bengals should have a 5 DT rotation -- B-Rob, Thornton, Smith, Askew, and Langston Moore. Quote

Jonboat That's a good point - theoretically, if the Bengals had Simon, they could tell the SS to stop looking in the backfield so often and go help Deltha. He needs it. Quote
