First-round safety Thomas Davis, the 14th overall player chosen in 2005 and a versatile defender who is expected to make an immediate impact, agreed to a contract.

The former University of Georgia star will sign a five-year contract worth $10.6 million, and the deal includes $7.97 million in guaranteed money. Davis will report on time to camp on Friday evening and be set to practice Saturday morning when the Panthers take the field for the first time.

Davis split his time in college between linebacker, and safety but the Panthers will use him at the latter position. League scouts were split before the draft about what position best suited Davis, an explosive athlete and big hitter.

In 39 games at Georgia, including 29 starts, Davis had 272 tackles, including 17 tackles for losses, three interceptions, nine passes defensed and six forced fumbles. Davis will certainly play in nickel situations as a rookie and probably will challenge for a starting job at some point.

Per ESPN, Davis signs his deal... I'm wondering how much this will aid in the negotiations for DP getting his contract done and getting his backside in camp ??

It certainly can't hurt I would imagine...

WHODEY !!!

From the enquirer NFL notes today:

"Tampa Bay reached agreement with running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, the fifth overall pick in the draft, and New Orleans signed offensive tackle Jammal Brown, chosen 13th overall. They are the first players to sign between No. 1, San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith, and No. 23, Oakland cornerback Fabien Washington."

I am still stumped on the holdup with Thurman. I heard it was about the length of the contract (4 yrs vs. 5yrs). Afterall he is a second round pick. I am sure the money is good. Every day wasted can never be recovered.

The fact that Davis signed a 5-year deal kinda takes some of the wind out of Thurman's claim that everybody's getting 4-year deals as well. Every slot that gets filled brings Pollack closer and I get the impression that he's probably really itching to get into camp. I think he'll be in by sundown on Monday. Who the hell calls their defensive coordinator while they're holding out???

Not really. Davis is a first round pick; Odell is a second. The slotting system is based on what te guys around your draft slot got, and those are all 4-year deals. And the closest 5-year deal to Thurman has a voidable 5th year.

The 5th year gots to be voidable unless it's highly incentive laden.

The Bengals tack here this year has been squeezing out longer contracts. It worked w/ Henry and even getting Ghiaucic at 4 yrs is better than 3 yrs for a 4th rder.

Pollack's guarnteed to get a 5 yr deal but I don't think the Brown clan should be dickering around w/ Thurman for 5 yrs. If Thurman turns out to be the monster he's hyped at, they'll almost certainly have to restructure anyway after 3 yrs or else risk a lot of bad blood.

Chiefs sign first-round pick Johnson

July 31, 2005

RIVER FALLS, Wisconsin (Ticker) - The Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday signed linebacker Derrick Johnson, their first-round pick in April's draft, to a five-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

"I just got off the phone with Derrick and he is very pleased and anxious to get to camp," Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson said. "We are pleased to get this done."

Selected 15th overall out of Texas, Johnson will look to make an impact on a defense that ranked a porous 31st overall last season.

The 6-3, 242-pound Johnson - the first true linebacker selected - recorded 130 tackles in 2004, including 19 for losses. He also broke the NCAA single-season record for forced fumbles with nine.

Johnson's older brother, Dwight, played for the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants.
