FOXSports.com has learned that the 49ers have agreed to terms with their top pick, and the top overall selection, Utah quarterback Alex Smith. The deal exceeds the total the Giants gave to Eli Manning, last year's No. 1 pick.

Smith's six-year contract is for $50 million and includes $24 million in bonus, the most guaranteed money given to a rookie in the history of the NFL.

The signing of Smith is significant, as nearly every other draft pick has been waiting for the No. 1 pick's deal to get done in order to base their deals upon that contract.

I'm hoping the Miami/Matt Roth deal will gease the skids for Odell, and the 3rd round picks are starting to fall in place so Henry should benefit. Pollack concerns me far more. Not sure how long it will take before the impact of the Smith signing trickles down to 17.

Caution marks negotiations

Pollack: No. 1s inch to fold

The Bengals and agents spent Monday digesting the first first-round deals of the NFL Draft, but it didnā€™t result in any new rookie contracts for the club by the close of business as the NFL grapples with life without a collective bargaining agreement extension.

The agent for third-rounder Chris Henry did say heā€™s far enough along with the Bengals that heā€™s trying to finalize a deal by Wednesday as the team tries to get its five remaining unsigned draft picks in shoulder pads for Friday morningā€™s first practice.

With players scheduled to report Thursday to Georgetown College, Pro Bowl right tackle Willie Anderson said he probably wonā€™t be on the field right away but he came away from Mondayā€™s workout encouraged.

Fox reported No. 1 pick Alex Smith arrived in the fold in San Francisco Monday night, a signing that should spark a raft of deals. ESPN.com reported that Raidersā€™ first-rounder Fabian Washington, a defensive back taken at No. 23, is on the verge of signing. The Eaglesā€™ Mike Patterson at No. 31 is also reportedly done after the Patriots signed the first first-rounder earlier Monday when guard Logan Mankins, the 32nd and last pick, reportedly agreed to five-year, $6.4 million deal with $4 million guaranteed.

Those are far from the slot for Bengalsā€™ first-rounder David Pollack at No. 17. Going off Denverā€™s deal last year at No. 17 for linebacker D.J. Williams, Pollack stands to make somewhere in the $6.5 to $7 million range guaranteed over a five-year contract.

The caution flags are up against the backdrop of speculation that the owners want an automatic rookie salary scale in the next CBA. With 2007 set to have no salary cap if there is no CBA extension, players are possibly looking at restricted free agency for as long as six years if there is no new CBA.

No one is talking about NHL, or NBA, or MLB chaos just yet. But there is just enough uncertainty out there to put a drag on things.

Pollackā€™s agent, IMGā€™s Ken Kremer, couldnā€™t be reached for comment Monday. John Michels, the Chicago-based agent for second-rounder Odell Thurman, said he continues to talk to vice president of player personnel Paul Brown. Michels didnā€™t want to talk specifics, but acknowledged the mood throughout the league.

ā€œThere are no secrets about it. The NFL Players Association has sent the word out to be careful before doing anything because of what looks to be very big ramifications,ā€ Michels said. ā€œThereā€™s a lot of uncertainty about the CBA. Rumors are flying around that the owners want some kind of fixed rookie salary in the next CBA, and I think everyone is kind of taking a look around and trying to see what that means. What kind of deal is it and whatā€™s in it? Iā€™m just speaking

generically and not about Odellā€™s situation, but I think that is why itā€™s been slow all around.ā€

The closest draft choice signed to Thurmanā€™s slot at No. 48 is Miami defensive end Matt Roth at No. 46 after he reached an undisclosed deal Monday.

John Frederickson, Henryā€™s agent, said Monday heā€™s also been talking to Brown frequently and he hopes he can wrap it up by Wednesday when he meets with his client.

When head coach Marvin Lewis holds his annual training camp media luncheon at PBS Tuesday, he has indicated he wonā€™t divulge which players have been cleared medically. The process of workouts and physicals appears to be on-going, but there could be a list of whoā€™s ready once they report Thursday.

Tuesday is when Lewis annually releases his depth chart, but paper probably wonā€™t match reality for at least a few days. The two biggest changes on it _Pollack at left outside linebacker and Thurman at middle linebacker _ are unsigned, and Anderson, in his seventh month of rehab from knee surgery, probably wonā€™t be with an offense that returns all its starters.

But an upbeat Anderson said Monday that offensive line coach Paul Alexander gave him a big sigh of relief after watching him in agility drills at Paul Brown Stadium.

ā€œI know what they worry about with an injury like that is the loss of foot quickness,ā€ Anderson said Monday afternoon. ā€œBut Paul was real happy when he saw what I can do. Itā€™s pretty much up to me (when I practice) and I could probably practice that first week, but I want to be careful. The recovery time is something I have to watch. I felt good out there, but now Iā€™m sore. At the same time, I donā€™t want to miss a lot of practices and get rusty, so you kind of walk a line. When I do practice, I want to be able to go and not have to sit out every few days.ā€

Anderson wonā€™t put a timetable on his return, such as the Aug. 5 intrasquad scrimmage or the Aug. 12 pre-season opener against the Patriots at PBS. He plans to continue doing much of the program he did in the offseason in Atlanta with Bengals strength coaches Chip Morton and Ray Oliver, and heā€™s encouraged because the knee isnā€™t swelling after workouts.

ā€œChip and Ray have been doing a lot of that stuff with me anyway,ā€ Anderson said. ā€œThe basic idea is to use core strength and training for functional movements instead of muscles that you shouldnā€™t be using. I didnā€™t take one hit on the knee, but it was the pounding away, and weā€™re trying to prevent that with a lot of stretching, flexibility and (shoes).ā€

Anderson is nearing the year anniversary of his injury. He believes it was the second week of camp that the pain from the torn cartilage increased, but he didnā€™t miss any games and doesnā€™t plan to miss any this season.

I'm quoting myself for only one reason. You see, I wrote my blurb before Hobson wrote his article and now I'm starting to think Hobs has hacked into my computer.

I'll know for certain if he calls Joisey gay during tommorrows update.

Not to be like mean or anything BlackJesus, but your obsession with Marvin Lewis is a little scary. Nice signature though, props on that.

I'm not too concerned about Pollack. I don't know if he'll be there on the first day, but I doubt he'll miss much if any camp.

I remember at least one of the reasons Chris Perry held out last year was because his agent had "bigger fish to fry" so to speak.

Pollack's agent was also Alex Smith's agent, so that deal being done should free him up to pursue the Bengals more voraciously with a deal. Although, it would be interesting to know if he is representing anyone else that was drafted earlier than Pollack. I imagine that will have a great deal to do with how quickly a deal gets done.
