Manual Write went to the fish in the 5th round (although I heard on the radio it was the 6th-I pretty sure it was the 5th) . I have read that he could be taken as early as the 1st round on a few web sites by a few teams that were afraid that he wouldnt be there in the 2nd. Most sites agreed that he had a 3rd grade. So, I was surprised that the Bengals didn't take him in the 4th rd. However, there have only been a few supplemental draft picks that have made a difference.Bernie Blowshard(Kozar) and Chris Carter to name a few.But I thought Write could have really helped plug the middle .I was even more surprised that they didn't draft Anttaj Hawthorne who slipped to the Raiders in the 6th(a real stud).Write is a hell of a lot better than a lot of the guys the Bengals have taken in the 4th .Another Big thing that they should have taken into account is that if the labor contract is not settled all of the guys not under contract will be free agents.which could kill the Bengals the way Plan B and free agency killed them.So You would think that the wise thing to do would be to get as many young guys under contract as posiable .My guess is that Mike Brown was being penny wise and pound foolish agin and put a 5th or 6th round cap on the deal.Dont get me wrong I'm glad they didnt get him in the first 3 rounds because he wasn't worth it at this point but a 4th round was about right.

Is there any reason at all to be conducting this discussion seperate from the one that has been underway for weeks in a seperate thread?

And, to put it bluntly, the original post on this thread could not be more wrong. Kindly stop seeing every move or non-move you disagree with as the specter of the bad old days. 31 NFL teams saw the kid workout and screamed "NO WAY". The Dolphins grabbed a project with their 5th. Finances have zero to do with that decision from Cincy or anyone else's perspective. Can he help my team is the more relevant inquiry. Apparently the answer was no.

That said, perhaps the mods can merge this thread with the longer one, and I would direct the original poster to some of the discussion and links in that thread. Particularly to the pro football weekly article.

I would also submit that Marvin Lewis knows what he is doing.

I wouldn't let this bother you too much.

1) Work ethic has issue - See work-out info

2) Not to bright - He was in the draft due to being inelegable(sp) to play due to grades. Mavin doesn't want talented dumb people on the team (See Akili Smith for Talented ignoramus)

3) He was a back-up at USC. With his commitment (or lack of) for conditioning, he wouldn't last a whole NFL season.

4) We have enough "projects" now as it is. Lets focus on getting them on the field (since we are already paying them) before we pick up another. I want our coaches to coach a super bowl team, not teach 4 or 5 rookies how to play football.
