jditty47
what do you think as this will be the clue to the entire season of how good we will be.
thefrazz
I don't think this will be a "clue" or preview to the season. However, even though I don't think CLE will get 100 yards, I think they will get close. They have a "runningback by committee" right now, and their RB's will start off slow due to being cold and not getting a lot of reps. Our LB's will have some trouble at first (that is if Odell and David earn starting roles) but I don't think the Browns Offensive line and their RB's are in the top half of the league. derekshank
I voted 96-105, but may have immediately changed my mind after voting. I agree that the first game will in no way be a clue to the rest of the season. I would expect a defense filled with young players and a new scheme to gel and improve throughout the season. So they may play badly in that first game, but I still doubt that Clevland reaches 90 yards on the ground, and here is why.If you look at the trends in football statistics, it isn't always just the quality of the run defense that determines the number of rushing yards that are given up. In our first game against Cleveland we allowed 139 yards on the ground. This was not merely because our run defense sucked (which it did), but because we only led this game for 2 minutes and 42 seconds the entire game! That gave the Browns the opportunity to grind the ball on the ground, because there was no need to put the ball in the air. However, in the second game, where Holcomb had to throw for 413 yards just to stay in the game, our defense held them to 76 yards on the ground. Why? Because they had to keep throwing the ball, or it would have been a blow out. Now I don't want to hear that our run defense was getting better toward the end of the year, because that had nothing to do with it. The very next week, The Baltimore Ravens (without Jamal Lewis) ran for 192 yards on us. This was because until the 4th quarter, the Ravens had a commanding lead.So I used a lot of words to simply say, I think our run defense will be better this year. I think our new scheme and the changes in the defense will help this a lot... but primarily, I think we won't get run all over because our offense will keep the other teams throwing the ball. Hopefully our secondary will show up better than they did in that 2nd Cleveland game.
Spain
so true derek! These guys are not going to have time to run the ball. Im looking at blowout. Cleveland has no direction now.

jditty47
you're crazy if u dont think game one wont define our season. WE NEVER GET OFF TO GOOD STARTS. if our run d is poor vs cleveland...expect it to kill our playoffs shots.
BengalszoneBilly
Hey! Why no poll choices for negative yardage? What's that? Just keepin' it real, eh? Oh, all right. Well I went time trippin' back to last seasons opening day game, on the road at the Jets, as it is with Cleveland this year. Here's what happened:C. Martin........29 - 196 1 24 J. Sowell..........1 - 19 0 19 S. Moss............1 - 8 0 8 Q. Carter.........1 - -2 0 -2 C. Pennington...2 - -2 0 -1 It adds up to 219 total yards and 1 TD. And the Bengals still only lost by a TD! Had only the run defense shown up, Cincinnati would have left the Big Apple with a win! As it stood the Bengals were beaten 31-24.Then I resumed tripping back in time to the 2003 opening day game in Cincinnati with the Bronco's. Here's what happened there:C. Portis........24 - 120 2 23 R. Smith..........3 - 23 0 12 M. Anderson.....7 - 15 0 6 A. Lelie............2 - 12 0 12 S. Beuerlein.....1 - 7 0 7 J. Plummer.......3 - 7 0 4 It adds up to 184 total yards and 2 TD's. Again the Bengals start the season 0-1 with this 30-10 loss to Denver. So the BOTH of the two season openers add up to a whopping 403 yards of rushing and 3 TD's, Or a 201.5 yards with 1.5 TD's average per opener! OUCH!! Now to this years opener:Factor in Clevelands weaker offensive line against Cincy's strengthened defensive line, and IMO, you can knock 90 yards off that average as well as .5 TD's.Factor in the Bengals are NOT facing backs the quality of Portis and Martin, and you can knock off another 60 and another .5 TD's off right there as well!Factor in the Browns will still be breaking in an almost completely new backfield with Dilhole at QB and Drougns at RB, along with the Bengals improved linebacker corps, as well as added run support from the secondary who will be able to play more "man to man," and you got yourself another 50 yards off, as well as the last .5 TD's there too!Now we're left looking at 1.5 yards and no TD's!Final factor: The Browns are no longer permitted to sell beer in bottles, nor are they permitted to allow such to be carried into the stadium, which frees up the entire Cincinnati defensive unit to not be constantly scanning the air for "incoming missiles!" Now you can wipe away that last yard and a half and see why I was asking for a poll choice of negative numbers! :player: I wish my math was that accurate. I really voted 76-85. Whew, I gotta quit trippin!
Kazkal
The only postion I think the browns are decent @ too is the run game >_<

BengalszoneBilly
It really does bug me when fans do things like that though. As it should. Kaz...you are wise beyond your years. And it appears to be many years beyond most Cleveland fans!
Kazkal
Ya I remember a basket ball player getting in trouble for punching a guy that threw a beer at him, though I think the players should be able control their selfs I don't blaime the guy I'd do the same thing if someone chucked a beer at me.Even worse case I remember hearing about a fan taunting a player using racist crap + stuff about his daughter who had died,so the player ran over and kicked his ass which I'm glad he did if I was a fan sitting buy that guy I would have hit him my self/rant off late + gonna go play a game of espn football

The_Next_Big_Thing
Personally, I think it will take our defense a couple games to really gel, and they will be right around the 100 yard mark.
cHaD711Johnson
I think we are going to have to wait until at least the pre-season to guess.
BengalNation1281
Damn! I didn't read it correctly and voted for how many yards I think WE will get vs. the Browns.I voted for 136-150 going off of that.
