walzav29
Which one of thse Super Bowls do you really feel we should have won? Them fumbling the kickoff in 81 (82) should have been our momentum. Even though it seemed like a blowout, I'll go with that Superbowl, but then again. That damn int that Billups dropped. Ouch. joshh967
I would definatly think the 88, wasnt that the year we shouldve punted at the end to take the victory but instead were stomped on a run play and they threw the td to win the game with little time left? HairOnFire
Why not ask the other guy? Bill Walsh once said that he felt the 49'ers beat a better team in 81' due to the Bengals being emotionally unready to play at the start of the game. He went on to say that the Bengals defense totally dominated the 2nd half and all that prevented the Bengals from outscoring the 49'ers was time running out. I agree. By comparison, Walsh admitted that the rematch was incredibly frustrating to him due to his feelings that the 49'ers were a far superior team featuring a passing offense that totally overmatched the Bengals defense. Yet due to their own mistakes and the occasion Bengal big play the 49'ers couldn't put the Bengals away, and even trailed very late. That said, Walsh claimed that despite trailing he remained confident they would win. All I know for certain is Boomer sucked hard that day. Rimington over Marino
Krumrie's injury in the Super Bowl was the sickest play in history to me. I think it was huge in determining who won.
walzav29
Haironfire. That was the best observation I have heard about those 2 games. I guess that answers my questions.
rob_justdmb
Some things to keep in mind about Super Bowl 23:The Krumrie injury was big, but SF lost their best offensive lineman in the 1st play from scrimmage. The Billups drop was big, but it was at the beginning of the 4th quarter, momentum had already shifted, and our offense only put up field goals all day. I honestly believe it was delaying the inevitable.I think the biggest problem with that loss was the gameplan. Coaching staff forgot what got us there. We won all year on big passing plays out of the run and changing up the run with does of Brooks and Woods. Brooks was non-existant, the play action was non-existant, Holman was non-existant, the deep ball was non-existant. Boomer's longest completion was 20 yards to Collinsworth. That's not what got us to the playoffs. Now I'll say this, it's what got us THROUGH the playoffs. Boomer did not have good passing games at all vs. Seattle and Buffalo, pretty sure it was under 300 combined yards for those two games.Super Bowl XVI was a blowout. We had chances to get back into the game, but we were never really in it.

BengalszoneBilly
We should have won BOTH! But '88 more so than '81!
AMC
All I can say is, when we make the Super Bowl this year we won't be playing the 49'ers!!!!!!!!!!!!! :player: :player: :player:
bengalboomer7
I agree with Billy, if you look at the box score we outplayed the niners in both those Super Bowls
walzav29
I just hope that Brady isn't the new Montana and keeps breaking our hearts.
ArmyBengal
Billy beat me to the punch on this one... The Bengals should have won both of them and I guess just being at XVI, it burns a little more. God I hate the 49's !!!WHODEY !!!
walzav29
Does Collinsworth still hold the rookie receiving record in a Super Bowl from his 1982 SB?
Bay Area Bengals Fan
We shoould have won both Superbowls. In the first one, we lost after Pete Johnson got stuffed on four consecutive plays on the goal line. In that situation, they should have gone with play-action on 3rd down, instead of running up the middle all four times. And in the second one, Montana hit Billups right in the numbers! To this day I still have nightmares about Billups dropping the ball.
AMC
And I can't even watch the pass to Taylor. I see the highlight and turn my head.I remember right before he makes the catch you see a Bengal going the opposite way in the frame to follow another receiver. Can anyone remember who that was? I want to say Barney Bussey.... :player: :player: :player:
rob_justdmb
Ray Horton was in single coverage on Taylor and was a step behind on the slant.
