A free agent that might look good in stripes!

Reggie Tongue? He'd be a better backup at SS than anyone else we have, but my guess is he is overpriced, and he was pretty much a bust last year for the Jets. I think in his 10 years in the NFL he has lost a step, and doesn't have as much range.

He can sure put a licking on RB's though. (pun intended)

Scouts.com rates Reggie Tongue exactly the same as Kim Herring -- a 71.

Tongue has good size, speed, and power. Shows excellent short-area burst and is a very physical strong safety. Is tough versus the run and is a physical presence in the middle of the field versus the pass. Has enough strength to hold ground at the point of attack and can line up in the box. Is extremely active, can make plays from sideline-to-sideline and does a nice job of getting to the ball carrier when filling against the run. Overall range in coverage has improved with experience and is fast enough to cover the deep half of the field. Can be overaggressive at times and recognition skills are inconsistent. Overall, Tongue isn't a prototypical strong safety because he lacks ideal size but he makes up for what he lacks in physical stature with craftiness and athleticism.

However, important to note, the Scouts.com report is heading into the 2004 season and not current. So take for it what it is. A guide of sorts.

Maybe... but I think we can all agree that Herring had an awful year last year. I expect Herring to play much more up to his potential this year... at least more so than last year, with all his rust.

So if Herring played poorly last year, and Tongue is ranked exactly the same, I think we can assume that Tongue would play poorly for us.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind having another SS, (and perhaps Tongue also underacheived last year) but Marvin seems happy with the secondary we have, so I wouldn't look for this move, unless as bengalsLB said... for the minimum.

Yes it was him who took that INT to the house but the guy was horrible for the first 3/4 of the season....awful.

No big loss here except for on the depth chart. John McGraw is more then capable al long as he can stay healthy. which in his case is asking alot.

I think the Bengals would be better off w/ Schulters.

Yes, Tounge was the guy that picked Big Ben and took it to the house but that throw was so off, it wasn't even funny. Tounge got hurt in training camp, was replaced by Eric Coleman and didn't get back in the starting lineup until J. McGraw got injured. He was in D. Henderson'd dog house pretty much all year. He can't move anymore and gave up some big plays. The rams really exposed him the last week of the season. I would pass, fellas.

If Smizzy and LesterLyles say pass on Tongue, that's solid enough to end any notion about Tongue in my mind. Thanks for the insight.

Schulters is only marginally interesting due to injury and how much of an upgrade he would possibly be over Herring. It would be wise to have a backup for Herring in addition to Mitchell in the event Mitchell just can't get it done.

But if it comes to that, I believe we would see Madieu at SS.
