TAMPA, Fla. - Akili Smith was released Monday by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the latest NFL team to part ways with the quarterback who was the third overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft.

Smith was only with the Buccaneers after the team agreed to sign him so he could participate with an NFL Europe team, the Frankfurt Galaxy, this summer. The Galaxy’s season ended on June 4, and Smith returned to Tampa for last week’s minicamp.

Taken by the Cincinnati Bengals, Smith was a member of the heralded 1999 quarterback draft class, which included Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Daunte Culpepper and Cade McNown, all of whom were among the top 12 picks that season. Only McNabb and Culpepper, starring for Philadelphia and Minnesota, remain in the league.

Smith appeared in just 22 games, starting 17, in four disappointing seasons with the Bengals. He signed with Green Bay before the 2003 season, but was cut.

While it's embarrassing for him, I'm sure he's still living large off that check that Mike Brown gave him. I could make do on that scrill.

There's always someone who'd offer him a QB coaching position...somewhere.

You know, that made me feel better about picking him. Yes, I know, it sounds crazy, but the fact that Tim Couch (1st pick), Cade McNown (12th pick), Shaun King, and Brock Huard were all picked on the first day, and all flopped just as badly makes me feel a little better.

Of course there's still the fact that we could have had all of Ditka's picks, and there's the Charles Fisher, Cory Hall, Craig Yeast, Nick Luchey, Kelly Gregg, Tony Coats picks. Fisher, as I recalled injured himself and finished his career. Hall played well once he left Cincinnati. Yeast was a bust. Nick Williams (Luchey) FINALLY showed he had the stuff and left town to go to Green bay. Kelly Gregg and Tony Coats were typical Bengals 2nd day picks. In other words, nothing.

Thank God for Marvin.
