Sulfsted retires

6/13/2005 - 6-13-05, 12:15 p.m.

Homegrown product Alex Sulfsted has informed the Bengals he plans to retire. The loss of the guard-tackle drops the roster to 85 players, two over the limit for training camp next month.

Sulfsted, 27, who played at Mariemont High School in suburban Cincinnati and Miami of Ohio, ended up playing in four games with his hometown team, all last year. The Chiefs drafted him in the sixth round of the 2001 draft and he played 14 games with the 2002 Redskins, but he signed with the Bengals five times.

Baby: Are we in danger?

Butch: Yeah baby, we've got to get out of town....now. Sorry, I don't mean to rush...didja have a nice breakfast? Did you get blueberry pancakes?

Baby: No, they were out. Boootch, where did you get the motorcycle?

Butch: It's not a motorcyclye, baby. It's a chopper.

Baby: But Boootch, whose motorcyc...(err)....chopper is it?

Butch: What does it matter whose chopper it is? Just get on, baby. We've got to go right now. Oh, c'mon baby....I'm sorry. Don't cry, baby. I'm sorry I yelled again. Look, it's Zed's. It's Zed's chopper, baby. Now let's go.

Baby: But Boootch, who is Zed?

Butch: Zed's dead, baby.

Zed's dead.

Now get on, baby.

Sulfsted may not get any call this year like he did last year. He knows he was just taking up space. With Ghiacuc and Kieft and Wilkerson, not to mention Andrews and now Kooistra playing guard, his chances are much slimmer this year. They also have the free agent rookie G Vieira from UCLA and Belton Johnson. Kooistra, Johnson and Vieira are all 6'6". Sulfsted is only 6'2.

He lived a dream. I know he wished he could have a long career in football, but unfortunately he just was not good enough. We all would give our left nut to do what he did. He had the best seats in the house for 2 years of ML's Bengals. He just sat and watched and was part of the team for 2 years.
