Corey Hall Retires

Corey Hall is hanging up the shoulder pads.

From Pro Football weekly

If you had penciled in Cory Hall on your Redskins roster or depth chart, flip it around and start erasing. Hall, the sixth-year safety who signed with the Redskins Tuesday, did a 180-degree turn and changed his mind Thursday, opting to retire from the NFL and possibly take a coaching job with Washington State. Hall likely would have struggled to get into the secondary rotation, but the announcement still comes as a surprise. It appears the Redskins now have turned their attention to former Bears CB R.W. McQuarters, who could be used at safety and as a return specialist. McQuarters was worked out but apparently left without a deal and will consider other options as well.

According to this morning's Enquirer, he is still going to play.

"EX-BENGAL WATCH: Cory Hall, the Bengals' third-round pick in 1999, played four years in Cincinnati before signing as a free agent with the Falcons before the 2003 season.

Hall, 28, signed last week with the Redskins after contemplating an offer to become an assistant college coach at Washington State. Several staff members who coached Hall at Fresno State in the mid-late 1990s are now with the Cougars.

Hall will battle Ryan Clark and two other safeties for a roster spot.

Hall started 12 games as a rookie for the Bengals in 1999 and has 70 starts in six seasons. The knock on him is that he doesn't make big plays. He has just four career interceptions.

"I started thinking about it after the draft," Hall said of the chance to coach. "I was like, 'Do I want to play or do I want to coach?' People were saying, 'You're not done. You've got three, four, five more years.' " "
