derekshank
Just read an article on the Bengals home page that had a quote from Herring noting how similar Bresnahan was to Marvin. It also talked a lot about the position switches, and got me excited about the year coming up.I am a little different from the average football fan. I grew up as a Buckeye's fan, so I rather have a hard hitting, smash mouth defense that intimidates - rather than a high-powered high flying offense, which most NFL fans seem to love. Don't get me wrong, C. P. is my favorite player, and you gotta love Chad, but I would love to have a defensive guy knocking WR's around to root for, like I did with Mike Doss a couple of years ago in Ohio State. So this atricle is giving me a little hope. I'm looking forward to the day when I can enjoy the other team having the ball, rather that want to turn my head every time Jamal Lewis takes a handoff. With OSU I love watching good RB's get hit in the mouth by A.J. Hawk. Maybe sometime soon I can do that same thing with Thurman, Pollack, and Geathers. WHO DEY?!! bengalboy40
who-dey. i'm with you bro. grew up a huge bucks fan and have grown to appreciate staunch, intimidating defenses. mike doss was fun to watch. although he's not a safety, film of odell thurman indicates he's that smash-mouth guy who'll punish those with/without the ball. hope he pans out, b/c that dude can HIT! I too would like to see this in Cincy.I inquired about Bresnahan at "Raiderfans.net" and HERE'S the responses I got!
The Big Orange
Hey, nice going Billy...good investigative work...you'll get the front page for that one. After reading that I wonder how we would respond if a Bears (or whoever the snot got Frazier) fan were to come on here and ask out opinion.Since he's not being a coordinator, but just a position coach I thik he'll do fine. A lot of guys move up and find that their ceiling, as far as leadership and ability, was a step back. I can think of lots of former head coaches who are now coordinators or even position coaches who found their leadership ceiling a step back. No shame in that...look at what a great job Lebeau is for the steelers...we just moved him beyond his ability. Fortunately that wasn't the case for ML. He's got Head Coach written all over him. Keep signing those extensions Mike Brown. My favorite part was when some Raider fan said that Brez would shine under a strong coach. I think a lot of people are like that. I know when I served with a weak senior pastor I wasn't very good...when I became a senior pastor I was lousy...but currently I am serving with a great and strong senior pastor and I am doing the best work of my life. BengalszoneBilly
Hey, nice going Billy...good investigative work...you'll get the front page for that one. Investigative work? Thanks, but I just asked them their point of view on Bresnahan, and as you saw, the opinions varied a great deal. Of course the majority said "he sucked," etc. A few others broke it down a great deal further. Wheather that's any indication of how he'll do here remains to be seen. That's funny that they said he sucked, diden't they have a defense ranked in top 5 because of him? or even top 3?"Atually, when Brez has a strong head coach who can lead the team he did well. Gruden had that team running like a fine tuned engine and Brez executed the defensive plan very well. Now Brez has Lewis as his head coach, the man who put together the Raven's Superbowl D, and Brez will be taking his ques from one of the best defensive coaches in the game. Brez will do fine for you. Even if he starts to screw up, Lewis is there to put him back on track." sounds good
jditty47
every other year with the raiders their d was good...not much to judge by...u cant tell if it was the players fault or the coach. time will tell.
BengalszoneBilly
every other year with the raiders their d was good...not much to judge by...u cant tell if it was the players fault or the coach. time will tell. Last year must have been one of those "other" years. They were rated worse defensively than the Bengals were. AND...that was without Bresnahan. BengalszoneBilly
i meant when bresnahan was there billy. I know jditty! They went to a Super Bowl, and then the defense went into the crapper the very next season, or that's the way the guys at Raiderfans.net are telling it! I tend to believe them on that. Wheather it was Bresnahans doing, or player issues is what I'm not too sure of!And they cycle from good to bad no matter who's coaching! jrandom42
What happened from 2002 to 2003 to the Raiders, was that everyone got old and fragile all at once. The Raiders lost 4 starters and 4 key backups on defense by week 5 and the whole team went into the toilet. Bres did his best with what he had, but the Raiders haven't had much luck in finding and developing promising young players on defense and it's hard to fault him for not doing better. On the other hand, Bres DID get both Charles Woodson and Philip Buchanon to play hard for him with only minor gripes, so I take that as a positive in his ability to handle players' egos and get them to play for him. andybren
I think we've all seen good coaches field crappy teams and mediocre coaches go to the Super Bowl. I, for one, think Mike Martz is overrated, but hey, he's been to 2 Super Bowls, so who am I to criticize. What matters is what Bres does for the Bengals. I think it's a plus that he's more in tune with Marvin's personality and style of play. And I think it helps that he basically had a "Carson year" in 2004, seeing who the players were, how Marvin liked to run his team. I don't see any reason not to be optimistic, despite what RaiderNation thinks.
BengalszoneBilly
I don't see any reason not to be optimistic, despite what RaiderNation thinks. Several mentioned that since he's teamed with Marvin, it may work out quite well for Cincy. We will see...
andybren
I know quite a few Raider fans (and went to the 2003 game in Oakland), and I wouldn't put much stock in their opinions, one way or the other. As a group they're not exactly known for a rational, even-handed approach to their home team.

As a group they're not exactly known for a rational, even-handed approach to their home team. I couldn't agree more. I wonder if I'd be able to be an Oakland fan if I lived there. I'd probably go crosstown to the land of the 49ers. Of course, that doesn't matter because I'm a fan of the best team ever!! OK, now I'm getting a little carried away. Time to go to sleep. Sox
The only thing that matters is what he does here as a defensive coordinator. An example;Deltha O'neal wasn't even good enough to start in Denver, and look at the job he did here. And in the 2005 draft, the Broncos selected with their first three picks not one...not two...but three cornerbacks....BWAHAHAHA!!!To repeat, who cares what Raidernation thinks? What happens here is what matters. Ickey44
The difference between the 2002 Raiders and the 2003 Raiders is that Bill Callahan was running the team. I know he coached them to the Superbowl in '02, but that was Gruden's team. Remember the complete lack of respect the Raiders players had for Callahan in '03?? Nobody wanted to play for him. You can't blame Bres for that.
