walzav29
The more I read about this guy the more I like him. He can be a DE superstar, and it looks like Thomas Davis might fall. Who knows? Maybe the Bengals can pick him up in the 2nd. That would be sweet. Then a speed wide-out in the 3rd. I can't wait for the draft!!!!!!!!!!!! AGrizzlyBaer
i dont see him falling past the cowboys first pick, i would love to have him too, but i just dont see him falling to

BengalPappaw
I agree -- Merriman will probably NOT slip to 17. If he does slip to 17, then I'd worry that something else is going on. Remember how Warren Sapp slipped due to the drug use.
TJJackson
Merriman is a good character guy, I can't see him falling due to any off the field concerns.I too would love to see him in Bengals stripes. I too do not see him falling far enough for this to happen.
rickscott
I think we're really dreaming if we think Merriman could fall that far. We'll be lucky if Thomas Davis is an option as he too could be gone. I guess I'd be happy if we come out of the first round with Davis. If we trade down into the 20's, I would actually be happy taking Baas or Spencer as I see that as a real need and one I don't want to put off and end up settling for a lesser player
HoTbOy
17. Bengals Shawne Merriman* DE Maryland 20th (+3) 13th / 23rd The Bengals had trouble stopping the run in '04. Merriman is an outstanding athlete who can play DE or OLB and could be the key ingredient to improving the team's athleticism. The Bengals would use Merriman as a pass-rush specialist at first but develop him into a two-way end opposite Justin Smith. I got this on mock draft 7.0 from the Sporting News today
Whur CHad At?
I see us taking Crowder or whoever really good WR is still available. But who knows, Merriman could slip, I mean did we really think Rothlesberger would fall to Steelers at #11? Or Suggs at # 10? I sure didn't. walzav29
Well someone has to slip. I think we are going to get a high impact player in the first.

jjakq27
Well someone has to slip. I think we are going to get a high impact player in the first. We MUST get an immediate impact player with that first pick this year. We don't have the luxury of paying a big salary to someone that isn't going to contribute anything during their first season like we did the last two.If that's the case, I'd rather see us trade down and save some money in the process. walshfan
The Bengals are very high on Chris Spencer among others... Paul Alexander was down at Ole Miss supervising the O-linemen workout.. He said that Spencer looks better than Damien Woody right now...high praise...I foresee them trading down to 26 or so and grabbing Spencer there in the first. His bonus and contract wont break the bank there and the team will have solidified itself at center hopefully for the next decade.... When you have as much money tied up and the expectations are as high on a player of Palmer's stature you get him a linemen he can line up in back of thats going to be a player thats not only smart at calling assignments but can do all the intangibles that a truly gifted center is capable of doing and in this draft thats Spencer...2nd round can be Shazor, Rudd, Davis, Roth or any other defensive gem they choose.. Alot of these guys might still be there...
chrishcovga
I doubt Merriman makes it out of the top 10. His private workouts were really good, straight ahead speed, and change of direction skills are top notch.Thomas Davis had a good workout, and answered questions about his straight ahead speed, but his coverage skills aren't as good as Brodney Pools is, and it wouldn't surprise me to see Pool go ahead of Davis.Taking a month early guess ( that is my nature you know )Cincy' trades down to either Philly or the Broncos, who need pass rushers i.e. Loss of Burgess and Hayward, I see it kinda goin' like this.Cincy trades down from 17 to Denver's 25th, pick up a 2nd rounder(Coincidentally # 56 again ) and a 3rd this year or next( Denver has no 4th or 5th rounder this year ) but they do have two 3rd round compensation picks!#25. Thomas Davis SS, Georgia#48. O'Dell Thurman LB,Georgia#56. Chris Spencer C,Mississippi#83. Jonathan Babineaux DE/DT, Ht,Wt,speed on this guy is pretty good, but his change of directional skills is better than some defensive backs. Should project to Defensive end and he's a playmaker.11 sacks as a senior. ( He does have two prior leg injuries a broken right leg twice ).#119. Antonio Perkins CB/PR, Oklahoma - could be a replacement for Weathersby, and someone to push the lagging corners on our roster.#153. Adam Bergen TE, Lehigh - He's a year away from pushing Schobel as the starter, and is a signing bonus away from pushing Kelly off the roster.#190. Darrell Shropshire DT, South Carolina - Right now, he's all over the board, some see him as a 3rd rounder, most see him as a late round pick.#233. - Undecided

walshfan
Grab Spencer first late in the first.. the man has never given up a sack in high school or collage! Give Palmer all the protection you can.. Braham is battle worn. He's on his last leg literally....Go for the rest later...

This is an excellent point and was on the front burner last year before the draft w/ Jake Grove instead of Spencer or David Baas at the center of things. jjakq27
Just a hunch, but I don't see Lewis making his first pick an offensive player three years in a row.
DontPushMe
Merriman is the freak of the draft. He looks like at least a Top 10 and maybe Top 5. top 10? top 5?? doubtfulhes probly going to drop a bit due to being undersized and a tweener, anywhere between 13 and 20 is where id say hes going, though he might go a bit higher because of this being a weak draft

schweinhart
Merriman definietly looks Top 10 bound. But it is interesting to note that of the 70 NFL personnel at Maryland's Pro Day, Gill Brandt specifically mentiones that the Chiefs had Vermeil, the team pres. and the team DC on hand. The Chiefs pick at #15, so either they might have sincerely believed at that time that Merriman will be there at #15 or they're looking to trade up.
