Former Bears Pro Bowl safety Bell dies at 47 March 16, 2005

SportsLine.com wire reports

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Todd Bell, a standout at Ohio State and a former All-Pro safety for the Chicago Bears, died Wednesday at 47.

Bell had an apparent heart attack while driving in suburban Reynoldsburg, Ohio State said in a statement. According to a police report, Bell's vehicle crashed into a house.

A four-year starter at defensive back for the Buckeyes from 1977-80, Bell was an all-Big Ten selection as a junior and senior. He had 87 tackles as a junior and scored two touchdowns that year, including the winning score in the 18-15 victory over rival Michigan when he scooped up a blocked punt and ran it to the end zone.

A fourth-round draft pick by the Bears, Bell played with Chicago through 1987, making the Pro Bowl in 1984. He did not play in the Bears' Super Bowl season of 1986 because of a contract dispute.

He played two years with Philadelphia before retiring.

He finished with seven interceptions, two TDs and 10 sacks in 103 career games.
