kingwilly
From NFL.com - Gil Brandt"Long ran at the combine. In Waco, Cincinnati linebackers coach Ricky Hunley, a college football Hall of Famer, put Long through his paces in position workouts."Very interesting. HoosierCat
Good catch willy. Found a write-up on the guy:http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/playerpro.../kharilong.htmlDefinitely a project, definitely has potential. Site ranks him No. 30 among DEs, so he probably goes on day 2 if at all...
schweinhart
Long looked quick off the snap with some strength in the Hula Bowl playing DE. Interesting to see Hunley out scouting a tweener like him. A DE/SSLB type like Long would add some versatility to a roster spot but I'd be surprised if he's drafted by Bengals. kingwilly
Well, Hunley was certainly there for a reason. No one goes to Baylor to just check out the abundance of talent, what was Baylor, 3-9?IF the Bengals go to a 3-4, and I say IF, this guy could be a sizeable guy to step up on the WEAK side as a monster-he is Steve Foley sized. The problem with us going 3-4 is that we have no true NT.
schweinhart
The Bengals have 1 DT who would fit the NT bill -- Shaun Smith.
JPW
The Bengals have 1 DT who would fit the NT bill -- Shaun Smith.Langston Moore also played NT at South Carolina ...I believe that Smith was his back up in college.
schweinhart
That's true. Smith did back up Moore in college. The problem I see w/ Moore as a 3-4 NT in the NFL is he's neither big nor powerful enough to keep from being moved or from making a play on the ball if he does stand up a blocker. Smith is bigger and stronger and showed it when he played for Bengals. He moves people not the other way around. And he would be the likelier of the 2 to draw a double.Even then, Smith still has his work cut out for him just to make the team because of his stamina and unlikelihood that he can effectively fit into a 4-3 Dline that stunts as much as the Bengals. Moore showed that he can log a lot of time and stunt some, but his bullrush peters out and he isn't quick enough to get backfield penetration.Good thing Bryan Robinson is in stripes Maybe Khari Long will be too but still looks like a longshot even w/ Hunley involved. If they think he can switch him to LB in 4-3 and rush upright at end in 3-4 looks, so be it. That much interest in Long sounds like Hardy's days are getting more numbered. kingwilly
I think Hardy's time with the team will be a directly impacted by how Nate Webster's rehab is going. Our LB core is OK, barring the injuries. I attribute Caleb's and Landon's nicks to rookies wearing down. Webster's injuriy was more serious. I like the idea of having another big guy who can end rush and drop into LB as a different option. All I see on this site are comments about having a SS who can come up and play the run, Fulcher-style.11 Current LB's on roster: Bold shows 2004 First-game Starters55 Marcus Wilkins LB 6-2 235 Texas 57 Allen Augustin LB 6-0 227 Florida State 56 Brian Simmons MLB 6-3 248 North Carolina 55 Frank Chamberlin MLB 6-1 248 Boston College 52 Nate Webster MLB 6-0 235 Miami (Fla.) 58 Caleb Miller MLB 6-3 225 Arkansas 51 Kevin Hardy OLB 6-4 250 Illinois 53 Khalid Abdullah OLB 6-2 227 Mars Hill 95 LaDairis Jackson OLB 6-2 260 Oregon State 59 Landon Johnson OLB 6-2 227 Purdue 95 Larry Stevens OLB 6-2 241 Michigan

All I see on this site are comments about having a SS who can come up and play the run, Fulcher-style. This is a good idea and one that seems to be shared by the Bengals in looking at Long. There are other undersized DEs NFL wise that foot the bill, like Jonathan Welsh and Trent Cole. The question about them is how well they can transition to LB and this will most likely mean SSLB in a 4-3. W/o question, the Bengals wanted to gauge Long's potential for themselves. How much he impressed them will be found out soon enough.I'd like to see the Bengals draft an LB like Darryl Blackstock, who is experienced at LB and athletic enough to proly play MLB in a 4-3 if needed. I have doubts that Webster will ever play MLB again and Landon will proly miss games because of his shoulders. Chamberlain is a UFA who doesn't look to be re-signed and Miller will improve but has an awful long way to go yet to start at MLB.
