He was a FA like spikes( - tran tag) in 2002 and left to go to the Falcons instead of us giving him a big contract.. well now he's been released.

Anyways he's only 28 i wouldn;t mind seeing him back in stripes for a decent price, but he'll probably be picked up.

I'd much rather have him then Beckett though.

Add Artrell Hawkins to this list.....

"CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Panthers on Tuesday released cornerback Artrell Hawkins, who failed to challenge for a starting position.

Hawkins signed as a free agent in 2004 as the Panthers attempted to bolster their secondary. He got hurt in training camp and first-round draft pick Chris Gamble slid into his starting spot.

Hawkins ended up as the fifth defensive back in the team's nickel defense.

His departure frees up $2.5 million against the salary cap."

OTOH, we could have used Steve Foley and Lamont Thompson last year...

Oh well, win some, lose some.

Foley hasn't played for the Bengals since week 12 of the 2001 season. And Thompson was cut before the season in 2003. It's been awhile.

Since neither one of them played D-line, I think we did just fine without them.

Well, that's just it: had we hung on to Foley and Thompson, we would not have had to spend as many picks and FA dollars on the LB and safety positions over the last 2 years, and could have dedicated more picks/dollars to the d-line.

Consider that over the past two years at LB:

signed two high-profile (and relatively high-dollar) FAs in Hardy and Webster, as well as a number of lesser LBs (Chamberlain, Wilkins, etc.).

Spent a 4th round pick (Abdullah) in 2003

Spent 2 3rd round picks in 2004 (Miller, Landon Johnson)

Yet despite all that the only LB slot I think anyone feels really happy about is Simmons, and our depth is highly suspect.

Same thing has gone on at safety. We pulled the plug on Thompson and Roman, then:

We signed Beckett in 2003

We signed Herring in 2004

We spent a second round pick in 2004 (Madieu)

And now people on these boards are discussing the possibility of a safety in the first or second round. And bengals.com has floated signing someone like Robert Griffith.

I'm not complaining; stuff happens. Every team releases guys who end up finding their stride someplace else, then finds itself struggling to replace the guy they thought they didn't need. Denver did it last year when they gave us O'Neal.

Marvin's made some good personnel decisions, and some poor ones. Every coach and GM does. All you can hope for is that in the end, you make more good calls than bad ones.

well the lb's have been hurt like none other

Oh, no doubt, and skyline is right that you have to cut Marvin some slack since so much has been injury-related. Like I said, don't take this as a complaint; you rolls the dice and you takes your chances. And so far Marvin has been more right than wrong on who he's kept and who he's let go.
