I wish this guy would be there at 17 but I think the Vikes will snap him up long before we get a chance.

Williams, speedy times draw attention

Michael Marot / Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Matt Jones and Jerome Mathis turned heads Sunday with their speed. Mike Williams did the same just by working out.

Mathis turned in the fastest time this year at the combine with an unofficial 4.32. But longtime combine veterans Bill Parcells and Gil Brandt said he was officially clocked at 4.25 - faster than Deion Sanders.

Williams was the biggest surprise. The former Southern Cal wide receiver had said Friday that he wouldn't run this weekend, but after watching some other top receivers run, Williams changed his mind.

"It was good to see Mike out there running," Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher said. "It's great for the clubs to see so many guys running."

Williams ran two 4.59s, but was not among the five fastest receivers.

Mathis, who played at Hampton in Virginia, was the fastest wideout at 4.32. Indiana's Courtney Roby was next at 4.36 and South Carolina's Troy Williamson was third at 4.38.

After Jones, there was a huge drop-off among quarterbacks. Louisville's Stefan LeFors was second-fastest at 4.62, and Sam Houston State's Dustin Long was next at 4.67. But all three were faster than running back Maurice Clarett, who was slower than 4.7 on Saturday.

One of the more intriguing quarterback prospects, Adrian McPherson, ran a 4.72 but injured his left quad.

His stock will most certainly fall after that 4.59 40 he ran at the combine, however, I still believe he will be a top 10 pick. It all depends on what the Bears are going to do. If they choose either Mike Williams or Braylon Edwards, then Minnesota will probably take the one that's left at #7. The logical choice for Minnesota would be to draft defense and nothing else in round #1 and #2, but, I can definitely see them going for a playmaker to replace Moss.

Williams in stripes? Wow can you imagine the chemistry between he and CJ? Palmer could quite possibly be pro-bowl next year if that happens.

The only way that the Bengals could get Williams is if they are willing to trade up to get him. My opinion is that Palmer is going to be a probowler next year no matter what transpires in the draft and free agency.

I honestly don't see why people think that 4.59 is a slow '40 time !

It's faster than what Jerry Rice first ran during his workouts.- Here's a little tidbit of info on the '85 draft. Cincy wanted Rice, but went for Eddie Brown because EB ran a sub 4.4 in all of his workouts.

It's faster than what Cris Carter ran at his combine workouts.

Game films show how good Williams is at getting separation at the line of scrimmage. He won't be outjumped, and he has great hands! Williams has good speed, but because he's a long strider, he'll be able to use tremendous body control to out fight defenders on the deep pass !
