jjakq27
It seems like everyday since spring training started last week, someone on the Red Sox has taken a shot at Alex Rodriguez. I am not a big A-Rod fan by any means but I am not sure what the Red Sox' point is. They won the pennant and the World Series so they ought to be classy enough and let that stand for itself. It sounds like playground stuff.I am also not a Yankees fan but I think it is funny how the Red Sox and the media are acting like the Yanks are the all time choke-artists. Since the the Red Sox last won in 1918, the Yankees won over 20 World Series. At the rate the Red Sox are going, it's going to be the year 4000 before they catch NY.http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...210363/1072/SPTMonday, February 21, 2005 No shortage of A-Rod fodder Millar latest Red Sox to critique Yanks' 3rd basemanThe Associated Press FORT MYERS, Fla. - Another day, another shot at A-Rod.Kevin Millar became the sixth Red Sox player in six days to criticize Alex Rodriguez for boasting about his workout routine and not measuring up to Derek Jeter as a "Yankee type."On Sunday, A-Rod was still a lightning rod when the mouthy Millar got rolling."I don't know him," he said. "I know one thing. A lot of us in this locker room, we watch a guy like Derek Jeter play over and over, and he's a winner."And then I think, I don't know if the guy (Rodriguez) grasped for the respect or whatever, but you don't need to tell people you're an upper tier player. You don't need to tell people that you work out seven hours a day."Rodriguez, obtained by New York before last season after Boston's bid for him failed, said in an interview last month that he leaves his house by 7 a.m. to work out while other players are sleeping or taking their children to school."That's the article that rubbed guys wrong," said Millar, who works out two hours a day in the winter. "When you're a professional, you do your work. Everybody ... works out in the offseason."Rodriguez reported to the Yankees camp in Tampa Sunday and indicated he would tone down talk about his training regimen."I'm proud of my workouts, kind of just like Roger (Clemens) was proud of his workouts, and I saw Jerry Rice do his thing," he said.He may not have heard the last from the Red Sox. With carefree stars David Ortiz and Johnny Damon due to report with other position players today, the hits could keep coming.
bengalboomer7
Just the media blowing s**t up to sell itself. I've gotten used to it by now and now you've started it JJ (BenalgBoomer slowly raises onto the soapboxI didn't even turn it on a sports station after the Conference Championship this year because I knew it was going to be two straight weeks of the T.O. show and I couldn't take it. ESPN is absolute garbage now!!!! There is so much insider stuff on there right now it's pointless to even browse through their site unless your willing to pay. The media in general just crams whatever they want down society's collective throats, swaying your opinion to whatever they seem fit. AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHH!!! And to think at one point in time I was studying to be a journalist.
AGrizzlyBaer
well its partialy the east coast people cause they love this. but to us midwesterners we could care less about that. if you ever watch pti, its exactly that case. Tony is the new york guy with a love for every little thing about the rivalry, while mike, is a chicago guy who is tired of it. so it just matters where you are from

I guess the Red Sox are still pissed that A-Rod didn't end up on their team last year.Personally I hope the Orioles knock both of those teams out this year (not like that's really going to happen though). It would be a big comedown for both if neither team made the post-season. That would make me happy.
Kirkendall
Baseball is marketing itself with this. Players know the if you keep the rivalry thick, more advertisers showup, more national TV games, giving the Red Sox more coin in their bank, giving the players more money to sit around and bitch. Welcome to modern baseball.
jjakq27
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/3421110FleetCenter mulls Yankee fan's proposed name Associated Press BOSTON (AP) - The arena is in downtown Boston, the heart of Red Sox Nation. There couldn't be a bigger insult than to name it after the captain of the hated New York Yankees. But that's just what Manhattan lawyer Kerry Konrad aims to do next Tuesday after his $2,325 bid won an eBay auction giving him the one-day naming rights to the FleetCenter. Konrad's proposed name: the Derek Jeter Center, after the Yankee shortstop. His winning bid threw the FleetCenter brass into a dilemma. "I told him, 'I don't think we can approve that name,"' arena spokesman Jim Delaney said."That name may not be as bad as A-Rod," Delaney said, referring to Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriquez, "but it's still considered obscene."He said he would talk it over Friday with FleetCenter president Richard Krezwick and a decision would be made by the end of the day. Arena officials have reserved the right to approve or reject any winning bid.The FleetCenter is home to the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins. The name became obsolete after Bank of America acquired FleetBoston Financial last year and the Charlotte, N.C., banking giant opted not to retain the naming rights. While the arena's owner, Delaware North Cos., searches for a new long-term partner, it has been offering one-day naming rights on eBay and donating the proceeds to charity. Past winners have included an online casino and a California man who named it for his wife as a Valentine's Day present. The names are posted on signs around the arena and on fleetcenter.comKonrad, a Harvard alum, had the high bid for the March 1 naming rights. His wife, Nina Webb, said it was part of a 20-year college rivalry with some Boston buddies.Delaney said Konrad has been understanding about their predicament, even suggesting that if his Boston friends match his winning bid, they can all settle on a 24-hour name for the arena. jjakq27
http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...T0401/504040357Monday, April 4, 2005 The Yankees strike back Johnson outpitches Boston's Wells in 9-2 winBy Mike FitzpatrickThe Associated PressNEW YORK - The tallest Yankee ever began the big task of putting the Boston Red Sox back in their place.Randy Johnson shut down Boston in his New York debut, dominating his new team's old rival. He outpitched David Wells, got help from Hideki Matsui and a rejuvenated Jason Giambi and led the Yankees over the World Series champions 9-2 Sunday night in the major-league opener.Already, there were bad omens for the Red Sox: Matsui leaped in left to rob Kevin Millar of a two-run homer in the third, Giambi stretched to reel in two bad throws by shortstop Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez made a diving stop at third on Edgar Renteria, and Tino Martinez made a backhand dive at first to prevent an extra-base hit by Johnny Damon.By the time Matsui hit a two-run homer off Matt Mantei for a 8-1 lead in the eighth, it was piling on.With Boston taking the field as champions for the first time in 86 years, the Red Sox returned to the scene of their improbable triumph staring directly at the 6-foot-10 Big Unit, brought to the Bronx to help the Yankees win their first title since 2000.Giambi, back at first base following injury, illness and an admission of steroid use, received a pair of standing ovations from the sellout crowd of 54,818 and went 1-for-2 with a single and two hit-by-pitches.Gary Sheffield, back from offseason shoulder surgery, hit a go-ahead single in a three-run third inning against Wells, and Martinez received two huge ovations in his first game in pinstripes since 2001.Since New York moved within three outs of sweeping the Red Sox in the AL Championship Series last October, the Red Sox had won eight straight, becoming the first major league team to overcome a 3-0 postseason deficit, then blowing out St. Louis in the World Series. But following an offseason of joy in New England, the Red Sox started with a thud, pitching poorly, making a pair of errors and losing their fifth straight season opener. New York had 15 hits off Wells and six relievers.
BengalszoneBilly
I'm certain the hate of the Yankees that lives within the Red Sox will get them their share wins against New York. One game does not a season make.

redsfan2
A - Rod is always letting his mouth get him into trouble. that's how he queered the deal that the Mets had offered him. He told them that among other " considerations " that he was going to need office space to handle his business. Mets GM said that obviously A - Rod wasn't used to being in the company of players that are the caliber of what is considered common in New York .... and promptly pulled the offer. Remember when the players conducted their business on the field ........ and used the clubhouse ?????????? Gheeeesh .... was it really that long ago ?????
