3-4 Defense

I was just wondering if anyone thought the bengals could play a 3-4 Defense? Maybe have Smith, Thorton, and a good DE (Free Agent or Draft Pick). Then Hardy, Webster, Miller, and Johnson behind them. Does anyone believe this to be possbile?

Bresnahan said we'd run more 3-4 in '05 but the base defense remains at 4-3. Perhaps if we had a big ol' fatty nose tackle then a 3-4 is a possible solution. But this team, with this personnel, I don't think it would work. But if they commited to it, heck, we have a ton of room for improvement, so it couldn't be too bad.

I like the 4-3, but if we could find a huge DT I wouldn't mind seeing more 3-4. Are there any FA DTs that would fill the gap efficiently enough for a 3-4?

i like the 3-4 defense, especially since we have young Linebacking core. maybe we can draft a LB in the 1st round and go with a run-stopping DT later in the draft b/c all the 1st rounders are pass rushers. We do have Mathias Askew 4th round pick last year.

Pat Williams from the Bills is a run-stuffer, he might be old but he will last us till we develop a run-stopping NT

IMO, taking into account the present defensive roster of the Bengals, if you think our run defense was porous with the 4-3...you ain't seen 'nuthin' yet!

Marvin is building the defense oriented around the 4-3. Why do people think he's wrong about it? I doubt they know more than he!

Marvin likes the 4-3 for the Bengals, therefor I like the 4-3 defense for the Bengals! :player:

Askew is only 308, that's about 30 pounds short of the average 3-4 NT. As for free agency, Pat Williams is old and will probably resign with the Bills, and there are really no other FA's that could play NT. I think we'll probably have to look to the draft to find our guy.

i dont know how many times ML has to say he doesnt want large DTs before the fans finally get it through their skulls

he wants athletic, small, quick DTs, not big NT types

and there is no way we will go to a base 3-4... it might be used every now and then, but it will not be our base defense with ml here

While he may have said that, history would tell us that he is definitely open to change. Look at two of the picks from the last couple drafts, Langston Moore (6-1, 303) and Matthias Askew (6-5, 308). While neither of these guys fit the mold of a 3-4 NT, they aren't exactly small either. Also, look at ML's 2000 Ravens D, the DT's were Tony Siragusa and Sam Adams, both of which can be described as anything but small and quickish, and that defense didn't work out that badly. It is these reasons that lead me to hold out hope (as I have more faith in big run-pluggers than small, quick DT's) that if the right opportunity presented itself (probably the draft), Marvin would be willing to sacrifice his philosophy about the small, quick interior linemen. Plus, that was also a large part of Frazier's thinking, Bresnahan might want to go in a different direction.
