Bengals Fan Rescuing Tsunami Victims

Cincinnati Native Shows His Stripes On Flight Helmet

CINCINNATI -- A Cincinnati man helping to rescue tsunami victims in southeast Asia is bringing worldwide attention to his favorite football team.

John Molloy, a member of a Navy search and rescue team, painted Bengals stripes and a Bengals logo on his flight helmet. The international news service Reuters distributed a photo of Molloy, in his helmet, aiding a child.

"I saw the stripes on his visor cover and it just gave me a little thrill inside," Molloy's brother, Larry, told News 5's Sheree Paolello.

"John has worn this hand-painted helmet for years, no matter where he's sent. He's a diehard fan and he's never given up. He loves the Bengals to death."

Molloy went to Amelia High School and joined the Navy when he was 21. He's performed search and rescue missions for 13 years in some of the most devastated areas.

"That's just his nature. He loves to do this. He loves to help," said Molloy's wife Chanin.

"I was more proud than anything when I saw it," Larry said of the Reuters photo. "It was the biggest thing for me. Ijust got a big grin on my face and thought, 'That's my brother John.'"

"I know he's got a really huge heart," said Molloy's sister, Robin Hathorn. "And I know he loves what he does."

But this mission to help the tsunami victims could be the toughest yet.

"He said it's like an emotional roller-coaster," Molloy's wife said, "because one minute he's happy to help and then the next he'll see the devastation and the sites and he said it feels like he's been kicked in the stomach."

Molloy has heard that his picture has gained a lot of media attention. He hopes it will remind people to pray for the tsunami victims and to continue to make donations
