It's that time again

Thought I would start a new thread

Bengals needs to me, addressed either through FA or Draft

1) DT (any suprise here? preferably a FA addition)

2) DB (CB or S, I dont really care which, just some youth+speed+playmaking in the backfield)

3) C (see "DT" comments above)

4) TE (none of our current TEs scare anyone, we need a consistant option/threat for Palmer)

5) LB (even though we have been screwed by injuries (Webster+Abdullah) Hardy isnt getting any younger, and Simmons has been decent as of late)

1st round: Well, we'll be picking around 15-20th, so possible players i myself like are:

-Heath Miller, TE, Virginia: Would be a value pick, could make an immediate impact, but also could quickly turn into a Perry-like situation. Recieving skills are tremendous, but can he block effectively in the NFL?

-I'm weary of taking a DT in the 1st (unless Wright is there) because of the recent history of teams taking them in the 1st round, but there isnt much talent left after Wright, Hawthorne, Johnson, and Ngata (Gabe Watson is staying at Michigan), so if we are unable to secure one in FA the 1st round might be our only shot at a top-tier DT.

-There could be potentially a bunch of CBs available (Justin Miller, Marlin Jackson, Pac-Man Jones, Corey Webster) and I'd prefer if the Bengals finally took a shot at a shut-down corner in the 1st, but it will all come down to who declares and workout numbers.

-The same can be said about DEs, but with solid players in Smith, Clemons, Powell and Geathers one might be hesitant to drop a 1st pick on a DE. But then again I consider all our DEs "solid" and not "great," anyone who saw the Colts-Ravens game knows how valuable a great pass rushing DE can be, but do any of this years prospects appear Freeny-like? Pollack has the motor and desire, but does he have the speed+strength? Mathias Kiwanuka has the physical ability, but are scouts just in love with his size and speed? Did Dan Cody flurish because of his supporting caste? Can Erasmus James hold up against the run and keep his past injuries in the past?

2nd Round:

-Safeties could be very tempting, especially with the likes of Dante Nicholson, Ernest Shazor, and Brodney Poole possibly lingering.

-Centers, again if we can't address it in FA this might be our only shot to grab a an elite prospect. Ben Wilkerson, Jason Brown, David Baas (G/C), Vince Carter are possibilities, although some might last to the 3rd.

But of course all of this can change between now and Junior declarations and the Combine.

Nice analysis -- good points!

Just a few points.

I have NOT been impressed by Rod Wright. I've got several game tapes and he just doesn't find the ball or dominate like I would like for a 1st round draft choice. He doesn't make the big plays.

Another interesting possiblity at CB (who has also played S) is Jimmy Williams, Virginia Tech, 6-3 210. He appears to have what Marvin likes i.e. a Safety with the ability to play CB.

I like is SS Jamaal Brimmer, 6-1, 205, UNLV.

I believe that the real "big butt" DT can be gotten, in 2nd or 3rd round. Guys like Anthony Bryant and Albert Means.

The other "little guys" (300 lbs) look like the guys we've got.

The only DT, that I've seen that looks to have the heart and aggressiveness, is Travis Johnson. It would be nice to have him rotating with Langston Moore.

The only DE, I'd take in the first round is David Pollack -- he's not the fastest, the biggest or strongest -- but he gets the job done. I believe he is a special playmaker and that's what the Bengals need. Not just numbers -- production on the field.

Go Bengals!! :player:

You sure that Gabe Watson is staying at Michigan ?

He was on my short-list at Fat-A$$ DT right behind Wright and Ngata.

Actually Ngata would be a good bet and maybe could be had in the 2nd round.

Bryant and Means are not highly rated but could turn out to be later round Steals.

Hawthorne really isn't a Fat-A$$ but I am guessing that he is the guy we take.

He Excels at getting after the QB from the DT position....

But he is also Very Strong and can Play the Run Well....

Some think he is the Best Run-Stuffer in the draft....

The knock on him is that he takes plays off....

Looks like Watson is not coming out, per gbnreport.com...

Big UM DT to stay in Ann Arbor...Michigan junior DT Gabe Watson has reportedly indicated that he will be returning to scholl next fall for his senior season. The 6-3, 335-pound Watson had looked at the possibility of entering the 2005 draft late last month, but decided he had unfilled interests in staying in school.

Of course, it's a long time 'tween now & then and kids have been known to change their minds...

i live in vegas and see brimmer regularly. He is awesome. the only reason his numbers arent great this year is cuz no ones throwing to his side of the field. Hes fast, can hit, and has great instints for the football. Hes prolly gonna go in the 2nd-4th rounds. Im guessing 2nd if he has a good combine. Id take him. definately.

I would take a DT, CB, or TE in Round 1.

I would like to see Marlin Jackson, Heath Miller or Mike Patterson in a Bengals uniform on day 1.

I pretty much concur with the Duffman. I would load up on D-linemen and a big safety unless there is a "can't miss" offensive player like a TE or C/G O-lineman in the first or second round.

I wonder if there will be any draft manuvering like last year? Perhaps a trade for more picks so we can move up or down if we choose. I think that is part of the brilliance of the NE organization. They always seem to have picks to play with and are able to load up at will.

With all the young players we already have, I don't think Marvin will do many draft day trades, just keep the draft picks we've already got.

I'm gonna have to disagree here...

Considering our needs, ( and the many that we do have ) and our Free Agency problems if Rudi and T.J. hit the market.... then I think this is as good as any year to add some picks.

Last year there were probably better DT's than ends, but this year might be different. If It's possible to add another 1st or 2nd round pick ( probably 2nd ) then we should be able to use our first 3 picks to grab a DT, DE, C and focus on grabbing CB's and safeties later!

The secondary would be better if there was such a thing as a 4-man pass rush on any kind of consistent basis. Of course, this is no GD different than the situation at the end of 2003 and not a GD thing was done about it.

Center is a bad situation. Is it going to be by committee again w/ the ancient Braham and Fontenot w/ Larry Moore at the ready? Or is this the position to pursue through free agency? Expecting a drafted center to come in and immediately start is not realistic but can be done --- look at the Chargers, who have a 3rd rd 2004 pick starting this year.

TE is a subject of disgust. Kelly adds virtually nothing to the team on the field. In the broadcast of the Giants game, one of the announcers actually said that Schobel couldn't block his way out of a wet paper bag. Stewart did nothing special this year. Same problem as the end of 2003 and nothing done.

But a better strong safety vs. the run who can also provide solid coverage is a definite need given Beckett can't be counted on and Mitchell don't seem quite the fix.

If James Butler is available in 2nd rd., I hope the Bengals grab him. He's got a Eugene Robinson upside.

we dont have a shut down corner yet, tory is going to be 32, deltha has been plagued with injury, ratliff will be better. a dt i hope they get in f.a. center could be a nice second round pick, as well as a possible saftey to complement mr. williams, and a te that could block and catch would be nice, so we could get rid of the garbage players that are on the roster now.

The point about the CB need w/ James on the downside is well taken.

However, to prioritize off-season dollars for the cap and draft picks, the versatility of Madieu and K2 to also play CB has to be taken into consideration IMO.

Plus, Brooks and Bauman will be off IR and have their chance to make the roster and both Terrell Roberts and Reggie Myles can play decently enough at CB if the other team's QB doesn't have too much time to throw.

Ratliff, O'Neal, and James will be fine at corner next year, and I think our safeties will be better after an offseason of getting healthy. If we can get a good safety or corner on day 2, snatch them up. If one of the top safeties or corners drops to us on day one and shouldn't be there, consider taking him.

BUT, we need to get offensive line depth including a new starting center, a pair of tight ends, and a damned defensive tackle in the draft as well.

Hell, I'd laugh but wouldn't complain at all if we drafted a center, a defensive tackle, and 5 rounds of tight ends!

Some junior notes from gbnreport.com today...

Virginia junior OT D'Brickshaw Ferguson, one of college football's rising stars on the offensive line, is being quoted as saying that he will definitely be back at school next fall. The 6-5, 295-pound Ferguson is also a very good student and plans to graduate; indeed, Ferguson reportedly has some thoughts about ultimately attending law school some time down the road. It appears that junior OLB Daryl Blackstock will also be staying in school. Blackstock, a big-play outside backer, changed his number for today's MPC Computer Bowl in Boise against Fresno State (see above) from #56 to #1 and says that he did not plan on wearing the new number for only one game. Meanwhile, the father of sophomore MLB Ahmad Brooks is being quoted as saying his son will likely return to school, however, "anything could change. On the other hand, TE Heath Miller, who is expected to be the first TE off the board if he enters the draft, hasn't stated publicly whether he'll be staying the scholl or entering the draft; Miller, though, is widely believed to be strongly leaning toward turning pro.

I am thinking that what we Need the most is:

1) On Defense...A Run-Snuffing DT.

2) On Offense....Someone to take over at Center.

But that does not mean that I would be unhappy with a TE or a SS or even a CB.

Shoot for that matter, I would jump on a Mike Williams or Ahmad Brooks if either of them somehow fell to our slot in the 1st round.

I am thinking that it might be interesting to have a thread for each Position.

Where we could compare notes on who we would like to see at each position next year.
