richmond_mat
Whew! The game was a whole lot more exciting than I expected. What happened to the Bengals for 7/8 of the second half? The offense became predictable and ineffective. The defense was on the field too long and had trouble on third down. It's going to take a much better effort next week against the ravens but let's worry about that tomorrow.I can't remember the last time the bengals won in such dramatic fashion.WHO DEY! tampa
It was a killer game... very exciting. Lambert just let his alcohol do the talkin for the past week of fear. He wasted a good buzz by overdoing today, I'm sure. But back to the game, it was a great show of sportmanship and you could tell the Bengals heart was stronger and beating faster.who-dey
HoosierCat
Whew! The game was a whole lot more exciting than I expected. You and me both. I'm still sweating. What happened to the Bengals for 7/8 of the second half? The offense became predictable and ineffective. The defense was on the field too long and had trouble on third down. They've been doing this all year. They get up, they ease off, they get down, they come on. One of these days (and it was nearly today) that's going to bite them in the arse. They need a little of Guthrie's "Group W bench" attitude: EAT DEAD BURNT BODIES VEINS IN MAH TEETH KILL...KILL...KILL!!!!!It's going to take a much better effort next week against the ravens but let's worry about that tomorrow.Yup and yup. redsfan2
Two things about this game ............. #1. ) 2nd consecutive win on the road, so that's one dead monkey. And #2.) How many times has the shoe been on the other foot when it came to scoring late ? You may not be able to remember the last time we won like this, but we all remember all of the times we lost like this. Last year it would have been amazing to overcome either one of the above. Much less to do both in the same game. Every week this team sheds another stereotype. Baltimore is going to be tough, but for the next couple a days ....... I'm just going to read the papers and magazines and listen to the interviews. God this is sweet.
San Antonio Bengal
Wow! This game was little too exciting, but the win is so much sweeter this way. This win showed me several things, most of which was the exorcism of several demons....Demon #1) Winning back to back road gamesDemon #2) Winning at PittsburghDemon #3) Winning despite losing the lead late in the fourth quarterDemon #4) Winning despite having fewer first downs and fewer total offensive yards than the opponentWhat made the difference was Cincy's +2 turnover differential and that they could keep their heads down and continue to shovel at the end of the game. The second half performance of this team still concerns me. The offense seems to fall flat and the defense just seems more lax. Maybe Marvin should give them more Gatorade at halftime? Even with their second halves, they've shown that they have the heart and the other intangibles necessary to hang on and still win.Another thing I noticed today were the similarities between this game and the Oakland game in week 2. Cincinnati was giving Oakland all they could handle. Oakland scored off of a Kitna interception to take the lead. But Cincinnati marched down the field and scored a TD to knot the score at 20-20. With under a minute, Oakland drove far enough to get the game winning field goal in the last seconds. In this game Cincinnati had the edge in almost all categories, except for the final score. It was the turnover and the defense on the final drive that essentially cost us the game. Today, Pittsburgh put up better numbers (although not by much), but we managed to pull out the late victory. It just shows how far we've come since week 2 -- to be in such a close game and have the confidence that we can win and also that we aren't making silly mistakes at the very end of the game to lose it. But there's still plenty to work on, especially in the second half.
Reimersfan88
I'm OK seeing the defense play sloppy this week, because Marvin Lewis is going to make sure he concentrates this week on tightening this thing up. As far as I'm concerned, it's perfect timing.

But they have got to do something about the second half defense. It's just not on. The defense got pushed around rather badly, especially on third and long. I know they are missing Burris, but that's not an excuse. I know they went into the season knowing that the secondary was a weakness and for the most part they have really played above themselves but surely they can do better in the fourth, cause I don't know how many more of those types of games Kit can pull off.....He still get's my MVP vote, especially now.cheers

I know they are missing Burris, but that's not an excuse. Hopefully, they'll get a couple of things straightened out. They've made the last 2 games a lot closer than they should've been. They had the Chargers and Steelers both on the ropes, and let them get back into the game. Not only is the defense getting pushed around, the offense stops scoring too. The thing that does make me optimistic is that what we are seeing is a repeat of Marvin Lewis defenses of the past. Everyone knows that his defense was ranked 5th in Washington, but it wasn't till the last part of the season that they really came on strong. Burris should be back for the Ravens game, but even at that the secondary needs some work. D line has held up pretty darned good against some of the better backs around. There are things to tweak here and there in all 3 phases of the game, but overall .... collectively, this team has already surpassed anything I was hoping for at the start of the season. kevnz
overall .... collectively, this team has already surpassed anything I was hoping for at the start of the season.Absolutely. Coach Lewis has done so much, so soon with this team, I am already excited about the long term outlook of the franchise. Not to mention that December has rolled around, they don't have double digit losses, not even close to getting the first pick in the draft, for that matter, anywhere in the top 15, I would say this season is a sucess...And I thought Coach Lewis was just talking when he said the Bengals goal was the AFC North... The special teams needs a better punter. Why do seemingly good college punters not do well in the nfl? Isn't it the same ball? The defense plays well sometimes. One more corner would help. But the other team only scored 20 points. REMEMBER WISHY WYCHE: SCORE 30 AND YOU WIN ALOT.The offense needs more/less aggressiveness at times. There were too many unsuccessful first down passes in the second half.I had hoped for 8-8, but now I want 10-6.
kevnz
Why do seemingly good college punters not do well in the nfl? Isn't it the same ball?I think a lot of it has to do with coverage teams, let's face there can be a rather large drop off in talent on the field in college, but even an NFL scrub is an elite athlete. But yeah, they need a punter, today made me long for Harris to come back...I do say the Bengals will end up drafting a punterm but that's still months away.I had hoped for 8-8, but now I want 10-6.now now, don't be greedy....But then I want 11-5 Cheers
San Antonio Bengal
I have to agree. Even if this team lost all of their remaining games (which won't happen) and turned in a 7 - 9 record, that would have surpassed my wildest dreams for the season. Marvin has done a wonderful job, and now I'm trying to be patient waiting for his defense to come together. Marvin will be working on that this week and in the coming weeks, but some of the defensive issues can't be addressed until the draft and free agency. But, I'm getting ahead of myself. All I ask for is a defense that allows at least 1 point less than what the offense scores. As for punters... I've wondered the same thing. By the time you get to the NFL, shouldn't punting be almost automatic? The only times there could be problems are if you're punting out of the back of your own end zone or if your long snapper is having problems. Of course, this is a non-punter talking, so maybe there's something about kicking a football that I don't understand? Want a nice, long, relatively injury free career in the NFL? Become a long snapper.
ChicagoJungle
I thought the biggest difference between the early effectiveness on offense and the late 2nd quarter - late 4th quarter was the absence of the run. We established the run early and it set up the pass. When we started passing on 1st down every series, it forced us into too many 3rd and long situations. I think even though Pittsburgh obviously made adjustments to fill some of the big gaps from the first two series, we should have pounded the run again and again until it worked again. This was frustrating, and I hope we don't let up so quickly against the Ravens this week.
