schweinhart Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 The Keyword is now: FATASS The FatAsses are few and far between this year But here's a few over 320 lbs in rated order with a shot at NFL IMO based on TV observation:1. Anthony Bryant 6-3, 325 Bama. Has line quickness and decent power but is slightly clumsy.2. Shamar Abrams 6-0, 345 UAB. Very agile for a fat ass, even has spin move. Leverage and short arms questionable.3. Donyell Booker 6-2, 320 Fresno St. Most powerful of bunch. Good line reaction but so slow that he actually waddles when he runs.4. Albert Means 6-4, 336 Memphis. This guy looks like the part...until the ball is snapped. I watched him vs. Louisville and based on his play in that one, this guy shouldn't even get drafted. Louisville double-teamed him for awhile until it was obvious to them that it was not necessary. Means was stood up or knocked every play I saw. Quote
BengalNation1281 Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 I was just putting down names of people who I was impressed with so far this year.I know we need a DT, but this isn't a DT-heavy year. There are numerous DTs that we could pick up in the second or third rounds that would do us just as much good as someone we were to get in the first.I want us to get a DT, but this is Mike Brown we're talking about!!! We'll end up getting Braylon Edwards to shore up our weak WR corps BN1281 Quote

chrishcovga Posted November 15, 2004 Report Posted November 15, 2004 Addressing our needs should be pretty simple sitting at 4-5 ! - We've seen how well our defense has been playing over the last couple of weeks, but we still need to be dominant up front with size and pass rush.Let's think for a second what would do our " team " the most benefit from those early picks.1. We have a lack of size at DT, and our De's aren't the dominant type.2. Peter Warrick might not be back next season. Kelley Washington has been slow to learn and earn his spot on the field and do you really want T.J. " Pootie-tang" Houshmanzadeh starting across from Chad..??3. If Scott Kooistra or Thatcher Szalay were going to beat out Rich Braham ( despite their injuries ) they would have done it by now ! 4. Tight end will continue to be a problem as long as Schobel drops passes and stays injured; Tony Stewart should only see the field as a special teamer !5. Safety could be in good hands for a long time with Madieu Williams, but who's gonna play next to him? Becketts often out of position and Kim Herring hasn't made the impact a veteran should have made by now. So let's see that's a DL, WR, C, TE, Fs..... - If we're truly going to see our draft picks make an early and immediate impact then our First pick ( if available ) should be Mike Williams wr USC. .... The more and more I look at next years " studs " on defense the more and more I think we should take Williams. Size and Speed and route running ability to start immediately. Takes away any chance at double teaming Chad. And most importantly can run block which means we could at times line him up at Tight end because of his size and combo route defenses till their heads fall off ! The matchup problems alone would force opposing defenses to zone more which would open more holes for Rudi which i expect him to sign his long term contract sometime before next March anyways.* Peter Warricks injury and contract status will decide that selection, let alone our record, but as we learned with our '80s teams, a great offense is a good defense! schweinhart Posted November 15, 2004 Report Posted November 15, 2004 * Peter Warricks injury and contract status will decide that selection, let alone our record, but as we learned with our '80s teams, a great offense is a good defense! True.Hopefully Warrick's injury is along the lines of a stress fracture that will heal completely and he'll be back w/ no problems. But time will tell.Bengals definitely need a top flight TE who can both block and catch well enough to log most of game. Schobel just don't seem to be able to get all the way over the hump.TE in 1st sounds most needed if pick is for offense. Unless Warrick is an absolute no go. Even then, there's a bunch of WRs to choose from.I'm for trading down and let ML get more midround picks.Players I'm liking are Chris Holmes TE Toledo, Andre Maddox SS NC State, Marcus Jones SSLB/DE Louisville, JR Russell WR Louisville, Patrick Body FS Toledo, Adrian Awasom DE N Tex. St, Anthony Bryant DT Bama, Travis Johnspn DT Fla. St., Roddy White WR UAB.Center looks like a crap shoot.Heath Miller TE UVA would be theft at #17 if he comes out. Got to figure him, Brooks, and Blackstock on UVA might go for draft after seeing what happened to their teammate Chris Canty this year. Quote
belmontbengal Posted November 16, 2004 Author Report Posted November 16, 2004 Ok, can we address the D line in the FA pool? I really don't know. If there are some sound HEALTHY vets available this offseason I think that going offense in the first round *might* be acceptable. (Mike Williams though? Is he even playing competitive football this season?) Otherwise, I am not so certain that we should stray from the Dline. If Antaj Hawthorne or that Wright fella are available at our pick I think you have to take him if we haven't addressed the line in the FA market.my 2 cents. Quote
chrishcovga Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 The hardest thing about judging the Defensive lineman is : The rush of underclassmen that come out every year ...1. Rodrique Wright2. Antajj Hawthorne - lead a pretty weak class of interior lineman because of the mad rush that happened last year. * Note of interest: All of those Defensive lineman drafted over the last couple of seasons has had a tremendous effect on playcalling this season. Offenses are passing at a higher percent than running; a pattern that hasn't been seen in over 10 years!!- But the simple fact is, there may be better DE's this year than DTs'. and the LB and CB positions are pretty deep as well. - If we pull out a 7-9 or 8-8 season or better, you can all but forget landing a premier DT or WR in the first round next season. The Wr class is weak, as is DT, however LB and Offensive Tackle could be worth taking a shot at. - Gotta love Ahmad Brooks from Virginia. Could be a serious steal in the middle of the first. Guy is like Julian Peterson. 6-4 250 , and plays MLB, SS, CB and Wr ! Quote
schweinhart Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 The hardest thing about judging the Defensive lineman is : The rush of underclassmen that come out every year ... Like Gabe Watson for one (6-4,333, Michigan). It'll be interesting to see how strong he plays down the bowl stretch. Here's a few UFA DTs to consider:1. Shaun Rogers - 6-4, 345 Lions. Unfortunately, he'll get franchised if he don't get deal.2. Corey Simon - 6-2, 295 Eagles. Having an off-year but still could get franchsied or deal done.3. Pat Williams - 6-3, 317 Bills. Probably will hit the market but downside is he'll be 32 in March.4. Marques Douglas - 6-2, 290 Ratbirds. DE in 3-4 but seems bigger than listed weight. Ravens won't have to franchise McAlister next year. Will be interesting to see who they do (Douglas, Anderson, Demps, Baxter)5. Jason Ferguson - 6-3, 305 Jets. Having a fine season and solid over career. Will be 30 yrs old.6. Seth Payne - 6-4, 315 Texans. Won't likely be re-signed since Texans went for Robaire last year to join Walker.7. Chris Hovan - 6-2, 296 Vikes. Quote

I'd be surprised if most of these guys were available next year, I would love to see Pat Williams in Cincy. I've watched him here in the Buffalo area for the last couple of years, and I even got to meet him once. He is massive, very athletic and would be a major upgrade to our run D(which has done a pretty good job of late against teams that can run the ball like Denver and Washington). Also, since he wasn't a starter till a couple of years ago I don't see being 32 a problem, he still has at least 4 or 5 seasons left in him.I don't see Buffalo parting with him, and if they don't then I would have to place Jason Ferguson and Marques Douglas on the wish list. Couple this with a Draft pick like Anttaj Hawthorne out of Wisconsin, or Rodrique Wright out of Texas...he 6'5 315 and may enter the draft as a junior. An Early Mock Draft for the Bengals has them selecting Channing Crowder a LB from Florida in the 1st, and Antwaun Rogers a CB from Purdue.Crowder is 6-3 245 and had a knee injury. He's a Sophomore and I'm not sure if he is really going to be in the draft or not. He has played this year. 7 games with 43 tackles, 2 sacks and 1 INT. Only 1 player on the Florida team has more tackles with 46 and he played in 9 games to Crowder's 7. The site I saw this on said that Crowder is the type of LB that Lewis likes and that he could be a great player in the Bengals' system if his knee is healthy.Antwaun Rogers doesn't seem like a standout to me, he has decent size at 6'2 172, but his stats this year show an average player, I'd have to read more on him to see why nfldraftblitz.com had him as a 2nd rounder.Mel Kiper really likes Ahmad Brooks from Virginia and said that the LB is big enough at 6'3 260 to play DE if needed.Anyway, its still pretty early. I've liked what Geathers has shown the past couple of weeks, maybe we can hope that Mike Williams is available or Braylon Edwards. It would be nice to have another dominant WR. The longer our offense can stay on the filed the less we have to worry about stopping the other team. Quote
Bengal_Smoov Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 After watching Auburn whoop on Alabama, their wr #86 Courtney Taylor looks like he is for real. He has made the big catches all season, which has been the key because he steps up when teams limit the run game. He is just Sophmore but we will be eligible, if he decides to turn pro(I'm sure he's having to beat the agents off with the stick), we could get him the 2nd and 3rd round. Quote
WhoDey93285 Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 i watched Gabe Watson in the OSU-Michigan game. That guy is a beast! He would be nice to have at DT. Quote
schweinhart Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 Toledo vs. Bowling Green last night on ESPN 2 had a couple prospects worth watching.Bowling GreenScott Mruczkowski 6-4, 319 Center. Powerful and quick dude off ball. Mawae mold who explodes down line when he pulls. BG O runs spread/option, which requires C to shotgun every snap so QB under center would be a change.Announcers said Kiper had him as a late rounder.Keon Newson 6-0, 186 DB. Ballhawk extraordinaire. Announcers didn't mention him on Kiper's list but this dude is a player in coverage.ToledoAfter watching parts of 2 Toledo games, their TE Chris Holmes looks like a NFL capable player. At 6-4, 265, he can block and is solid at coming into motion and stopping behing guard to smashmouth block for run. As a receiver, he reminds me of Daniel Graham. Maybe not the polish yet but the potential is definitely there. Quote
chrishcovga Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 Well after the Steelers loss, it's apparent that we should be picking somewhere between the 7th and 16th pick. My " list " of who should be available and provide quality at those selections are..1. Mike Williams - why should he be there..? because of who's drafting high next season. the 49ers, and Dolphins need Quarterbacks first WR's second. and Braylon Edwards is probably a little faster than Williams.2. David Pollack - Still unsure how his workouts will look, but his motor is worth a high selection alone. Best fit may be to drop 20 pounds and play strongside MLB.3. Mathias Kiwanuka - Could be another Jason Taylor or Simien Rice! The Guy is 6'8 so throwing to his side creates problems. Not as fast as Rice, not as strong as Taylor.but that's why they call it 'training camp!4. Derrick Johnson - Can play all 3 positions Strong,MLB, and Weakside. He's the irresistable draftable player for Cincy! - Provides immediate answer at MLB and can be groomed to be Hardy's replacement at Strongside as well. 5. Corey Webster - Very strong cover corner. Can hit like a linebacker and has the hips to run with most wide receivers. Doesn't have elite Speed. 6. Antrel Rolle - Speed, Hands, plays with nasty streak like most Hurricane defenders. Doutful he makes it past # 7 !7. Rodrique Wright - We'd have to be pretty lucky to have him fall to us. He's quick, strong, and always faces double teams. A guy like him in the middle could make any MLB look good !hmmmmmm I love draft talk.... Quote

Yep, and teams that draft this way are garbage. And if the Bungles are drafting the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE, then you would have thunk it that the Bungles would have grabbed Stephen Jackson when they had the chance.Teams should draft for NEED in the first couple of rounds, then draft for BPA. Just my opinion. The only way a team should draft BPA for all 7 rounds is if they are the New England Patriots and trying to solidify their holes in backup needs.Again, JMO. Quote

After getting a good look at Pollack in the UGA-Ga Tech game, I'd be surprised if Erasmus James goes ahead of Pollack. Pollack's every bit as fast off the snap as Terrell Suggs and would make a great SSLB/DE. He's got the speed to cover when needed if he can pick it up mentally.I watched Kiwanuka some earlier in year and he looks like Manute Bol out there. He'd be better off sticking around for his senior year to improve his leg strength. Players that tall usually don't stick if not on O-line, except for extraordinary players like Too Tall and Harold Carmichael.Wright looked good vs. A & M Friday. He seems quicker than Hawthorne.Williams might fall some but gotta figure he's no later than 2nd WR picked behind Edwards. A Warrick-type WR is Terrence Murphy of A & M. I'm guessing the 4th WR picked after Edwards, Williams, and Clayton is between Murphy and J.R. Russell of Louisville.Derrick Johnson is the 1st LB picked w/o question. If it came down to picking Rolle or Webster, I like Webster because he's more versatile position wise in the D backfield. Besides, J.R. Russell pretty much used Rolle when Miami played the Ville.2 others who should be available in mid or late 1st round that I like are James Butler S for Ga Tech. He's got Rodney Harrison timing and looks like a no-brainer inpact player in 1st year at interchangeable safety.Another is Michael Boley, an undersized LB (except by Bengals standards ) from Southern Miss. Great range and hard-hitting. The next best OLB to DJohnson in draft IMO. Quote
BengalPappaw Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 I like the idea of taking the best "player" -- despite other people's impatience. Marvin knows how to make this work. The Bengals currently will be drafting at 17th and most of the draft projections have them taking Corey Webster from LSU. (He looked better last year -- but has been slowed by an injury this year.) The Great Blue North Draft Report has the Bengals then taking Mike Patterson, DT in the second round! I like those two for our defense. Another possibility around the 17th position is Elton Brown 6-6, 335, Virgina at RG. I watched him play this weekend and he was awesome --pulling around either side and wiping out LB and DBs. I also like Thomas Davis, FS, 6-1, 220, Georgia at that 17th pick. My preference is (in order): Mike Williams, WR Braylon Edwards, WR Rodrique Wright, DT -- although he has NOT look consistent in recent games Derrick Johnson, LB Antrel Rolle, CB Eramus James, DE Mark Clayton, WR Thomas Davis, S Corey Webster, CB/S Elton Brown, RG David Pollack, DE My bottomline take the best player that Marvin an fit into this team, then get a good offensive line coach and GO BENGALS!!!! P.S. BUT, do NOT select another back-up running back. DeAngelo Williams would make a nice starter, if you don't resign Rudi. Quote
