walzav29
After seeing Lamony Thompson leading the NFL in interceptions, does it make anyone wonder why we have a 1st grade teacher as our safety and not him. Why you ask? Because Marvin didn't draft Lamont so Marvin didn't want Lamont. I'll bet that no matter what Rudi does this year that he'll be gone. (I don't care what the article says on Bengals.com) Did Lamont suck that bad in his 2nd year to be cut? Time will tell, but I'm sure he's not as good as our collection of Raven's and teachers are back there.
BengalBobNC
Hmmm.Lamont is tied with three other players with 3 INTs for the most by a DB.According to cbssportsline player rankings:Lamont is ranked 61Madieu Williams (drafted by Lewis) is ranked 17Tory James (brought in by Lewis from Oakland) is ranked 52Deltha O'Neal (brought in by Lewis and started the season hurt) is ranked 67Lamont has made 15 tackles/8 solo, 3 INTs, and 4 passes defended.Madieu has made 35 tackles/25 solo, 0 INTs, and 2 passes defended.Tory has made 15 tackles/13 solo, 1 INT, and 3 passes defended.Deltha has made 5 tackles (all solo), 0 INTs, and 4 passes defended in limited action. Two of Lamont's INTs came last night against the Bret Favre who was mind boggling generous with turnovers. Packer fans were booing like never before. Otherwise his stats are average.I like Marvin's picks personally.
Barbarian
Here's something to think of:You have to question COACHING HERE!!!!!The Development of a player is lacking once again in Cincinnati!!! You have to blame that on coaching. That's where I'm going to say that the LaMont Thompson Project went wrong--with no player development!!! When is the last time that a Defensive Back was developed properly in Cincinnati???? David Fulcher??? How about player development on the Defensive Line??? Look at Big Fatty Wilkerson and Justin Smith for these wonderful examples!!! It seems, the only development that the Bungles can do is WR and RB. TippCityRick
Again Barb, you bring up a player not developed under previous regimes. It would seem that Mr. Thompson pissed off someone in authority early and often. It began with his holdout for first round money when selected in the second. He held out to get a split bonus as I recall. Anyway, HE put his development behind his financial security. Those kinds of character traits don't just leave you. I think this same thinking has Mr. Perry and Mr. Ratliff on the bench. Thompson was cut early never really seeming to get a "chance" here. Marvin just isn't gonna put up with those kinds of priorities.
kevnz
Thompson was afraid to tackle people. His INT's are not surprising when you consider that the one against Miami was thrown straight to him...And as for the pack...well Favre has got issues and they are in real trouble in Green Bay.As for player development. Thompson hardly had any time with Coach Lewis and co before getting the axe last year. Player coaching is an issue in the past, but I think people should just chill for trying to rag on Lewis for player development, those examples from Barb were pre-lewis, and the jury is still out on Smith, but Smiths problem is hey needs some beef beside him. jjakq27
My biggest problem with Thompson was that it looked like he was afraid to tackle people. Maybe in Tennessee's scheme he is free to roam around more and not help in run support as much.
BengalPappaw
You guys are right -- the problem with Lamont Thompson was the fear of tackling AND the Bengals don't need some else who won't tackle!!!Thompson hurt his neck in college and appeared to be afraid to make aggressive tackles. I believe that Marvin made the right decision for his (our) team. [and I liked Thompson when I saw him play in college -- but he lost the aggressive tackling)
Fab Five
None of you can sit here and say that Thompson is worse than Kaeshviaharn, Beckett, Herring & Williams... The four players here are all average players at best with Wiliams having the most upside out of any because he's younger... There is no doubting that Thompson has a huge upside and at 6-3 225 can cover and tackle well... He would not be playing for Jeff Fisher is he could not. The Bengals problem is that we cut an average guy with a huge upside and turn around and re draft the position (2nd rd pick) when your problem on defense (front 7) was not addressed early enough in this draft... Thats why the defense is giving up 160 a game on the ground. Key word of the day... Vicious Cycle.
skyline
Key word of the day... Vicious Cycle. That's two words, friend.Lewis has a plan, and certainy didn't cut Thompson purely because he was drafted by the old regime. For whatever reason, Thompson just didn't fit Lewis' blueprint. As to whether or not his plan will work out is yet to be seen. Now is certainly too early to judge, though. You haven't even given the current cycle time to end! This "vicious cycle" may have happened in the past, but unless my logic is confused, shouldn't we wait until the current cycle is done before we decide that it has happened yet again? Kirkendall
Lamont Thompson never caught on with the defensive scheme and who would have known Thompson would have the decent season he's having after tearing cartilage in his right knee; it's a 50-50 chance the player will perform at the professional level in the NFL at a secondary position. Hell, Thompson wasn't seen good enough to upseat Mark Roman at the time. Thompson at the time was victim of final cut during the 2003 pre-season BY MARVIN and obviously there was concern about the knee and his inability to adapt to the Bengals defensive scheme.Problem with this post, is that it shows 20/20 hindsight. Where were the appeasers when Thompson was initially cut? It's like saying Kijana starting at RB on a Monday Night game scoring 3 TDs with 150 rushing yards. Everyone now says, Josh, you're f'ing insane. Just wait, they are there and if Carter ever does it, trust me, someone will be bitching about releasing Carter. redsfan2
When coach Lewis got here, I was as surprised as everyone else at the time that "Toast Thompson" ( remember that moniker ? and how he got it ?) was one of the players that Lewis singled out as one of the guys he wanted to be here. He elaborated on this at length saying that he ( Toast ) had been blamed for things that were in reality the fault of coaches and or other people on the field. He then stated that Toast would be given the chance he deserved to develop into the player he was capable of being. Toast responded in his typical fashion by showing all the response you would expect to get from a guy who is 6'3'" 225 pounds and catatonic. Only after failing to take advantage of the new start that he had been offered was he cut. Was it quick ??? Yeah .... Lewis was trying to improve the franchise, and didn't have a lot of patience with people who weren't on board ( read wouldn't play to potential ......... see Ross ... Dillon et al ).As to whether or not he is better than what we have .... See stats listed by Bengal Bob. As to playing for coach Fischer he doesn't ... not on a regular basis. He's listed as a back up for Shulter on the depth chart. There is plenty to complain about on this team that is legitimate. Wringing your hands over the loss of Thompson and the rest of the underachievers isn't among them. Want to complain ???? I don't blame you, but keep it factual and in proper context. Fab Five
I see you know your stuff LABengalsFan09To all others my point was not made about how great I think Lamont Thompson is... My comments were about comparing the average players we have at Safety vs Lamont Thompson... Personally I think its a wash... I also think he tackles and covers no worse than the guys we have here, but has more potential... The majority of us are making the same point... He's just an average safety on Sundays and we have a bunch of average-to below average safteys on our roster... No need to push that any further...My point was that we had to spend a 2nd round pick on someplace other than our front seven which no one can deny is a problem... Now you've cut one average player for another average player at a position that you could have waited on and the front seven does not get addressed until later rounds!!! Come on... The draft is a major reason why we give up 160 a game on the ground.Ford Tough!!!
LABengalsFan09
I will say I am thrilled with Madieu, after ripping the Bengals for not taking Sean Jones instead, but if we still had Lamont, we could have drafted Dwan Edwards in the second round instead of Keiwan Ratliff, who may turn out to be a real good player, but Edwards would definitely have added som beef to the front 4....Fab 5: Keep on postin' w/ Jessica Rabbit.... I love her...Is your name a UM reference?(Gasp!)It just seems like a were always a step behind on improving, having to retrace our steps... I think that's all fab 5 and I are trying to say... Scottishbengal
Personality?Imagine, if you were the manager in a business, in any walk of life. What if you didn't feel a member of staff was:-1. Up to the task2. Followed/believed in the "corporate aim"3. Followed/believed in your management style4.
