AGrizzlyBaer
off bengals.comBengals add veteran safety Mitchell10/6/2004 - 10-6-04, 11:30 a.m. BY GEOFF HOBSON The Bengals have turned to another Marvin Lewis product to fill their injury-riddled safety corps. Anthony Mitchell, a special-teamer on Lewis’ Baltimore team that won the Super Bowl four seasons ago, has replaced waived defensive end Elton Patterson on the roster. The 6-1, 198-pound Mitchell, 29, who started six games with Baltimore and Jacksonville the past two seasons before being cut by the Jaguars, joins a decimated group trying to get healthy during this bye week. The Mitchell move indicates that there could be enough concern about Rogers Beckett’s concussion that it will shelve him beyond next week’s Cleveland game. Plus, with Kim Herring (foot) and Kevin Kaesviharn (back) not ready yet to get a full-go, the Bengals are apparently making plans not to get caught short after they lost Beckett and Kaesviharn by the end of the first quarter last Sunday in Pittsburgh. The Bengals were forced to play with their two second-round rookies at safety in Madieu Williams and Keiwan Ratliff, and Ratliff made the conversion from cornerback cold with 50 snaps. Mitchell never started in the two seasons he played for Lewis with the Ravens in 2000 and 2001, but he had 36 special teams tackles in those two seasons and one of the biggest plays of the Super Bowl run. He scooped up Al Del Greco’s blocked field goal and went 90 yards for a touchdown to break a 10-10 tie in the fourth quarter of Baltimore’s 24-10 divisional playoff victory in Tennessee. He also has a post-season interception from the playoffs the next season, and his three interceptions in the regular season all came in 2002 in Baltimore. After the Ravens traded him to the Jaguars for a 2004 conditional draft pick just before the 2003 season, Mitchell started two games for Jacksonville last year as a nickel back in posting 10 tackles from scrimmage and 16 on special teams. He came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Tuskegee in 1999 with the Jags, but ended up on Baltimore’s practice squad at the start of the season. In the tradition of Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick, Lewis has shown a penchant for turning to players that he knows from other clubs. Three of the newest additions to the roster _ Mitchell, cornerback Rashad Bauman and wide receiver Cliff Russell _ played on teams Lewis Coached

HoosierCat
I thought safety might be the place they were looking after Marvin very negative comments on Beckett (who wasn't a high resigning priority in the offseason, if you'll recall). Still think they have to find a LB too, tho. Which means someone else would have to go...

schweinhart
Bengals.com got Beckett returning for this season, so IR seems unlikely for him.The LB audition announced earlier will hopefully still happen.I'd say Sulfsted is on the bubble. As long as Levi and Braham or Moore are good to go, team doesn't need 10 O-lineman.
