In many cases you are talking about a difference of 5-10 yards between punters in field position.

therefore someone who is adequate is fine, and of course the better they are the merrier, but if a team is relying on their punter to make-up for their defense then they are in big trouble.

As eluded to above the Pats won the SuperBowl and didn't even need anyone special...thus my point.

I think punters make-up for the offense stalling on a drive. Pin the opponent deep, if the defense forces a 3 and out your offense should get good field position.

There is a big difference between 1 and 10 at the 20, or 1 and 10 at the 1.

Good punters don't need to kick it far.. they establish good hangtime, corner kicking so the return guy has nothing but Orange jersay's in front of him. Plus, as Bob accurately pointed out, it helps the defense with more green behind them.

Lastly, the net average is the key stat for Punters not just average. Some guy could average 60 yards a punt, but if his net average is only 20-25 yards, then it defeats the purpose of having a strong legged punter.
