FonzieDog
If you were the Jet's defense, what would you do against the Bengals?I know the common opinion is to blitz the like crazy against a quarterback making his first start in the league, but I don't think that is what I would do if I were the Jets. Palmer seems more mature and collected than your typical first year starter. I would be more concerned with the Bengals running game. I would still blitz, don't get me wrong, but I would be more selective. I'm sure the Bengals would be expecting a strong and constant blitz from the Jets D. I think the best way to rattle a first year starter is to throw things at him he is not expecting. That's just me.
JetFanGonz
well, simple answer to a simple question. If I were running the Jets D, I would tell my guys to chill out, relax and just stand there b/c Palmer will probably just crap his pants and Rudi Johnson will trip all over himself. Kirkendall
When teams did blitz during the off-season, Palmer showed a lot of his inexperience. I think the key against the Bengals offense is to play a sort of blitz zone while playing 8 in the box during obvious rushing situations to mix things up. Palmer's biggest challenge isn't athletic ability, rather the mental aspect that could get us in trouble; which is expected out of a first-year starting QB. TippCityRick
I don't remember where, but I read Herman Edwards quoted this week as saying that they will be blitzing, but blitzing to stop the run. He knows that most good offenses use the run to set up the pass. He believes (and I thing correctly) that the Bengals will try to put CP in 3rd and short by pounding RJ. This is why it is so important for Braham to play cuz he's the best at getting the blocking assignments called to pick up these run blitzes. The Brew Man
If I were the Jets defensive coordinator I would have said this, oh wait, he did....We know one thing. Corey Dillon is not in Cincinnati because of one guy- and that is Rudi Johnson,” Henderson said. “It lets you know that they can let Corey Dillon go. He is an excellent guy. He can run, he is physical, he can catch the ball. I think they got exactly who they wanted right now. P> “They run the football. Let’s make no bones about it. We know which way it is going, they know which way it is going,” Henderson said. “ It is a test of our wills. We have talked to the guys about that and if you look at tape you know these guys know how to run the football. They know how to block it. We are going to have to line up and see. If I have to put more guys over there, I have to put more guys over there.”

If I were running the Jets D, I would tell my guys to chill out, relax and just stand there b/c Palmer will probably just crap his pants and Rudi Johnson will trip all over himself. Will probably just stand there and crap his pants .............. That woulda been Blake. Who we got from you .... along with his dead ass head case ... I mean head coach Brucey. We ran him before we even got good. Will trip all over himself .... That woulda been Dillon .... who we also got rid of and who will now be running all over your teams ass twice a year. That is provided they can find you. How is it you call yourself the New York Jets .... when you're really the New Jersey Jets ?????????? Identity problem ??? or a lack of geographical acumen ????????Re the original question ............... Stop the run and force the Bengals into 2nd and 3rd and long situations where you can make the most of your pass rush abilities. If Rudi gets going, he's strong enough to put a strain on your defenders and wear them down. Backing him up is Perry who has the added dimension of catching the ball and pressing the lb's and db's. Unfortunately, I still think your team will win the game ..... It's not going to be fun for them tho. :player:
smizzy
Id blitz carson on every play just to force him to throw it quicker...inexperience will get the best of him eventully.
85inthehall
if I am the jets D here is what I do:Mix up coverages and fronts -- keep carson guessing a bit -- bring a safety up or sneak a corner over -- make him over think when he doesn't have to.Palmer will be geared up with his first game that he might try to do too much. Maintain containment on rudi -- with our new speed it should be a bit easier than years past with slow mo and marvin. You will see some blitzing, but not as much as you will see a wide variety of looks. daredevil25
Blitz and play a lot of 8 men in the box. Make Palmer force throws and put the game on his arm. Doesn't really have to be exotic packages, but bring the load and keep Rudi from setting the tone. That's easier said than done, but if Rudi is averaging 4-5 YPC the PA passing game will hurt, as it would for any team.

schweinhart
Jets D will have best chance at success with shifting fronts and fake blitzes to try to get CP to audible or get on wrong page with receivers on hot reads. Jets pass rush will aid delayed LB blitz but Bengals play action sets, smashmouth ground game, and WRs exceed Jets personnel to stop the fronts of attack.Jets D will have to react to Bengals O rather than other way around for most of game.Restored Bengals OL seals deal. Questions about coverage of Moss w/o O'Neal at full speed factor in.Bengals 27 Jets 20.

Yeah, you're absolutely right....that's the exact reason why Coach Lewis felt comfortable enough to trade Dillon and name Palmer the starter.....why didn't I see that before? Spreading the sarcasm a little thick huh? Try some subtlety next time with that sarcasm sandwich.
