Good Defensive Overview

In addition to their base and nickel, the Bengals have been trying out a 3-3-5 hybrid with Harrisoon as a swing DE/SLB (yup, the joker spot isn't dead yet). Rey is also looking thinner and faster and that is making a difference in the run D. Brennan thinks we'll see a lot of this 3-3-5 as a counter to the increased use of hurry-up/no-huddle offenses around the league that won't give the D time to swap out the base 4-3 package for the nickel. But anyhow definitely worth a read.

ugh. every year, we hear that ReyM will play less and then he plays more.

as for Rey's new body: kudos to him, and I hope that he gets a lot of love because good press will help with his real problem, which is not below the neck

Agreed. I have largely tuned out the "this year it will be different" talk about Rey because we've heard it all before, and every year has been SSDY. That said, Rey is looking better so far. Whether that translates over once we get to real games, who knows? But it's an encouraging sign.

It is a very good read and I forgot to mention Maualuga after the Titans game.

Even the people in the stands were commenting about how he was flying around and making tackles.

Not 15 yards downfield either. Running out to the sideline and making a play to stop a drive.

Does that mean Maualuga is going to be All-Pro this season ?? No, but it's a nice way to start things off.

He just needs to continue improving. I'm hopeful he will this season. What choice do we have ??

I'm probably just a sucker, but when Zimmer is defending Rey and saying that he's getting a lot of undue criticism...

I tend to believe him.

On one hand I agree with the thought of, "we've heard this before" and on the other, I believe Zimmer 99% of the time.

I'm just hoping we see the Maualuga Zimmer sees and not the the one us fans think we see for the 2013 season.

Well I was a big rey homer since he's been hear and was ready move on last offseason,But I'm glad we kept him because in zimmer I trust and rey has looked better this offseason...Quite faster then he's ever been.

I think the Rey thing is not that complicated. He was slow, over weight and injured much of last yr and he did not play well. This yr he's playing much better. We'll see how he plays once the bell rings

All we heard about last offseason was how Rey had been working out like a fiend at Ignition here in Cincinnati with a trainer and was in the best shape of his life. Was he THAT out of shape before that he was still considered slow and overweight after all that training ??

Don't get me wrong, he has looked good to this point in 2013, but i'm confused about these reports.

It reminds me of when Keith Rivers spent the whole offseason working out MMA style to make him a "meaner" type of player.

Result ?? Yeah, he pretty much sucked.
