I took a look at some stats for the packers offense on NFL.com. I was in the camp to sign Greg Jennings but was surprised to find he only played 8 games last year and was basically a nonfactor . Also was surprised to find that the packers didnt have a 1,000 yard rusher or receiver.

receiving:

Randall Cobb 80 954 11.9 39 8

James Jones 64 784 12.3 49 14

Jermichael Finley 61 667 10.9 40 2

Jordy Nelson 49 745 15.2 73 7

Greg Jennings 36 366 10.2 45 4

rushing:

Alex Green 135 464 3.4 41 0

James Starks 71 255 3.6 22 1

Cedric Benson 71 248 3.5 11 1

Aaron Rodgers 54 259 4.8 27 2

But what the packers did do extremely well was score touchdowns. Not only that, but Rodgers was outstanding. 39 TDs and only 8 picks. Got sacked 51 times which is a little over three a game, though.

Aaron Rodgers 552 371 4295 67.2 7.8 39 7.1 8 1.4 51 293 108.0

That 1.4 number is his INT percentage! 552 attemps and only 8 picks.

Where am I going with all this? Well, I thought former free agent Greg Jennings would be the answer for the Bengals to take pressure off AJ. But these stats show otherwise. The answer lies somewhere inside quarterback play, offensive line play, receiver play, and offensive play calling.

Dalton threw 27 TDs but 16 picks. He was sacked 46 times which is comparable to Rodgers 51. The Bengals offense came in 14th in the league in TDs (Green Bay was 4th, SF 49ers 12th, and Ravens, the SuperBowl champs 10th).

Look at the Green Bay receivers. James Jones had 14 TDs alone. I just can`t see a Sanu type guy putting up those numbers. Granted, Jones is probably very fast and Rodgers has an elite, drop back arm (meaning a totally different type of offense).

The Bengals need more weapons on offense. 14th in TDs puts them out of the playoff talk. All the teams in the top 12 have tons of playmakers. Not only that, they also have really sold and even spectacular offensive lines.

I`ve now adjusted my thinking about the team this offseason. Free Agency isn`t really the answer for our offense. We need superior interior lineman and a real answer (aka James Jones, Randall Cobb) next to AJ. Those can be found in the draft in rounds 1 and 2. Defense can wait.

People are too enamored with the Patriots double TE offense. Even Lapham has jumped aboard. I think we all know that Dalton isn`t Brady and it is near impossible to find two TEs like the Pats have. But we can build on offensive line like them and like the packers. So, if Finley is comparable to Gresham, then what separates the Bengals from being the Packers is a line giving more space and time for Dalton to hit targets, GIMME A LINEMAN a WR that can actually get open downfield (Jones), and offensive play caller designing plays to his players strength. Maybe Gruden can do it, though I am not sure, yet.

All the more reason why Dre staying is important, but I digress...

I think Sanu can be that type of player. You have to remember he didn't begin the season with much playing time and then got hurt.

I also believe the Bengals have big plans for him this season.

That being said, yes, I want another WR and another interior lineman.

And a running back, and safety, and linebacker.

Please.

Of course Sanu could be that guy. As a percentage of total catches, he had more TDs than James Jones. Bengals were a completely different offense with him on the field.

That said I have no objections to giving Andy more weapons. And that includes the TE from Notre Dame.

Hmmmm.... I`m on the fence about the TE from Notre Dame, as you can tell from my intial post. Riddle me this. If Charles wasn`t able to complement Gresham in this offense, why would the Irish guy?

Maybe Charles sucks? Tough to say one way or the other since we haven't seen a lot of him, but just a thought.

That's my whole point. The coaches have had nothing but good things to say about Charles and we haven't seen him.

There's simply no reason to think we would see any more of any other TE on this roster due to how they are used.

Use a first rounder on that ?? If they were to give me more reason, fine. If you want a WR, draft one.
