roar loud
Palmer, right, spent all last season learning behind Kitna. The Bengals finally got it right. With a history of ruining young QBs, the Bengals let Carson Palmer learn for a year and it should pay off, writes John Clayton. One big help for Palmer will be WR Chad Johnson, who looks great in camp .

He explodes into his slant routes, but more impressive is his hands. He snatches everything out of the air, rarely dropping anything. He's emerging into one of the hottest young receivers in football and will make Carson Palmer's transition to the starting quarterback job much easier. Whether it was moving training camp to Kentucky or nightmares about Akili Smith, the Bengals finally got it right. Kentucky is horse-breeders' turf. It's sacred ground in which thoroughbreds are trained and champions are taken to stud. But that's where the Bengals had been getting it wrong. They'd take studs and lead them to slaughter. From David Klingler to Smith to others, the Bengals were the destroyers of franchise quarterbacks. Enter Marvin Lewis, whose career was built around breaking down opposing quarterbacks his defenses. He drafted Carson Palmer and let him sit through a season like a thoroughbred in training. This yearling wasn't racing. Watching Palmer practice in Georgetown, Ky., isn't that much different than watching Smarty Jones working with a trainer in the Kentucky blue grass. It's peaceful. It's serene. It's pretty to watch. Clayton: Best/Worst case scenarios | Postcard Four more yearsMarvin Lewis, who led the Bengals to an 8-8 record last year, signed a new contract shortly after the end of last season, team spokesman Jack Brennan said. "We were so pleased with how it had gone on and thought he had done an extraordinarily effective job and we wanted to show him that we appreciated what he had done and offered to extend the contract," Bengals president Mike Brown said. Lewis received a new four-year contract that will pay him more than $2 million a season, replacing the four-year deal he signed when he was hired in January 2003. "It was very positive and very gracious and flattering to me, wanting to renegotiate and extend the contract," Lewis told the Cincinnati Enquirer, although he did not confirm the length or the amount of the new contract. "(Brown) just felt like that the two of us could make this thing work long term
