Rams Sign First Round Pick

Recommended Posts

ESPN reports the Rams signed first round draft pick, Steven Jackson.

The St. Louis Rams signed first-round draft pick Steven Jackson to a five-year, $7 million contract on Sunday. The deal includes a $4 million signing bonus for Jackson, the 24th overall pick and the first running back taken. He ran for 3,625 yards and 39 touchdowns in three seasons at Oregon State. The Rams envision Jackson as the successor to Marshall Faulk , who is entering his 12th NFL season. Faulk, 31, is signed through 2008.

Not bigtime money which should ease Bengal fans during contract negotiations.

According to NFL guidelines ( not set in stone ) players selected in subsequent drafts = to the same draft position = to similiar or identical positions can only expect a 5-10% increase from the previous year' contract at same spot.-

--- How many days from April does it take to work out a 5-10 % increase from diddly squat # 26..??

Appears that there's some typical penny-pinching going on. Take this little nugget from today's bengals.com story on rookie signings:

Some of the hangups could be more over structure, rather than the signing bonus that is used as the slot. For instance, the agent for third-rounder Landon Johnson, the 96th pick, and the team have been staring for weeks at deals at 93 and 94, and were apparently still trying to smooth out issues Monday. Andy Simms had no comment Monday, but remained confident of a pre-camp deal.

OK, they're dickering around --for weeks -- with the structure of a deal for a guy who was taken a few picks shy of day 2...

Well, you're talking about the Brown & Blackburn Connection--so I'll say Week 8????

Week 6-8 sounds about right.
