Roster Battles: Tight ends...

Recommended Posts

The Offense:

Quarterback: Carson Palmer, J.T. O'Sullivan, Jordan Palmer

Running Back: Cedric Benson, Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard

Fullback: Fui Vakapuna

Wide Receiver: Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens, Antonio Bryant, Jordan Shipley, Andre Caldwell, Dezmon Briscoe

Tight End: Jermaine Gresham, Reggie Kelly, Chase Coffman

Left Tackle: Andrew Whitworth, Anthony Collins

Left Guard: Evan Mathis, Nate Livings

Center: Kyle Cook, John Luigs

Right Guard: Bobbie Williams, Evan Mathis *(Mathis slides over with Livings stepping in at LG in the event of injury to Williams)*

Right Tackle: Andre Smith, Dennis Roland

Only spot I really see being up in the air is the 6th WR but every thing looks good besides Manthis backing up RG,Make more sense for Livings to move to RG being evan is much more athletic and better at pulling.

The Defense:

Defensive Tackle: Domata Peko, Tank Johnson, Pat Sims, Geno Atkins

Defensive End: Antwan Odom, Robert Geathers, Carlos Dunlap, Jon Fanene

SAM Linebacker: Rey Maualuga, Roddrick Muckelroy

Middle Linebacker: Dhani Jones, Abdul Hodge

WILL Linebacker: Keith Rivers, Brandon Johnson

Defensive End/Outside Linebacker: Micheal Johnson

Cornerback: Leon Hall, Johnathon Joseph, Adam Jones, Brandon Ghee, Morgan Trent

Strong Safety: Roy Williams, Chinedum Ndukwe, Kyries Hebert

Free Safety: Chris Crocker, Gibril Wilson

Agree fully though few more spots could be up in the air then the offense but looks good

The Specialists:

Placekicker: Mike Nugent

Punter: Kevin Huber

Longsnapper: Mike Windt

I like Clark harris myself he snapped perfect last year why go with a rookie when you have a guy you know can do it?

No doubt the Bengals may stick with Harris, just going with a hunch in Windt. With Mathis being the guy to shift to right guard I'm going off the interview we did with him on my podcast in which he relayed that he was the most ambidextrous player among the interior guys and would be the one to play the right side if something were to happen to Bobbie, but nothing ever happens to Bobbie so probably don't have to worry about it, LOL....Knock on wood.

If Dan Coates makes this roster, the tight end position will have again been brutalized by injuries. I don't remember hearing J.P. Foschi's name this offseason and am too lazy to check on his status, but he'd even be a better choice. Neither ought to be on the team ahead of Coffman though.

Yea, the Bengals didn't even tender Foschi and that was the end of that, especially after they determined that Kelly had recuperated fully enough to re-sign him.

If we keep this on topic of the tight ends, I again don't think there is much to discuss.

Kelly, Gresham, and Coffman

Coats gets shown the door because he really sucks and if injuries were to happen again, I would prefer them look at Foschi again.

He was far better than I had anticipated when he was signed and Coats was far worse than I could have imagined.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing what a healthy TE corps with those 3 is capable of. Once Gresham signs and is fullintegrated with the play book, I think he takes over full time with Kelly playing the mentor role. Two TE sets, they have been trying to put on the field for a few seasons now unsuccessfully, will be sick with both Gresham and Coffman.

God I hope these guys stay healthy !!!

Besides staying healthy, I think Coffman needs to become a viable blocker as well. Brat tends to telegraph his play calling anyway, so a player that tips Brats hand even more due to being too one dimensional certainly doesn't help imo. One would think that you could split a guy like Coffman into the slot a la Dallas Clark but perhaps Coffman's foot issues cropped up before something like that could be implemented.

Dayum, there's a metric butt-ton of talent on this team. I'm not sure I've ever seen, in my admittedly rather green Bengaldom, such a strong squad. Not even one position can be considered 'weak'.

As for the TEs - just like London buses. You wait ages for a pass-catching TE and suddenly two arrive.
