Provides a solid blocking TE option. Also means we can finally say goodbye to Coats.

BlainThePain
Great news. He's probably the best leader on the team.
Trevor
Damn,.. Our weakest spot last year,.. Now a top 5 corps IMO
HairOnFire
They may not be eleventy deep at TE, like they currently are at WR, but close enough. A rock solid signing if for no other reason than Kelly is probably a better position coach than the official one. Now Gresham gets the mentor needed to better ensure long-term success, and Chase Coffman, a player the Bengals seem adamant about NOT playing, gets pushed further down the bench. It's win/win. Sea Ray
The whole thing is his health. If he's not healthy then he won't be able to help much and even he doesn't know at this point if he'll be 100% by Sept
ArmyBengal
Hard to argue with the signing of Kelly even if not 100%. He's simply a great leader and mentor to the young guys that will certainly be here more long term than him. The best part of the signing is, if they all stay healthy, we won't have to worry about Coats dropping balls all season long. Keep him around long enough to get through the extended preseason and say your goodbyes.Goodbye !!!

Even if Reggie isn't the player he was, his knowledge of the game, and what he can teach Gresham and even Coffman about blocking will only better them. BlainThePain
We might actually pass out of the three tight end sets we run on the goal-line now.

Damn, that is gonna be beautiful! What I'm really hoping for are some two tightend singleback sets on first and second down, especially against the Steelers. Pittsburgh's linebackers looked awful in coverage last season, and Gresham and Coffman are match-up nightmares for linebackers. These sets would either have linebackers on two receiving tight ends or them committing their safeties to man coverage giving Ocho and/or Bryant single coverage. It would also allow us to play more to Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard's strengths on first and second downs, and allow us to rest Benson more. Kazkal
Welcome back Reggie glad to have you! Hopefully our top 3 stay healthy so coats is gone gone gone!Should be interesting to see who starts now will Gresham be the starter with Reggie coming in on 2 TE packages? or will Reggie Start & Gresham & Coffman come in on passing downs.Quick! Knock on wood. I'm happy he's back. TE is looking alot better than last year. Not only better then last year but Can't remember when had better group of Tight Ends,The only way I feel could have been better is if we took Mccoy in rnd 5.... hopefully everyone can stay healthy. We might actually pass out of the three tight end sets we run on the goal-line now. Indeed be a Nice thing being able to run or Throw out of a 3 TE set and not having to have a extra Linemen play TE.

I won't say much more without knowing how healthy Kelly is, but one of the biggest roadblocks the Bengals are likely to face in the playoffs will be the much despised but heavily respected Jets, and Reggie Kelly's blocking is the key to beating them. markymark69
Great news. I'm not sure what he'll do on the field coming off the Achilles injury, but chemistry and leadership in the locker room are more valuable in football than any other sport IMO and Reggie excels in that area. Great mentor for both Gresham and Coffman.
jonahdsage
real happy about this. first off he's a great TE and all the leadership stuff that's already been mentioned. THis also smacks a little bit to me of the willie anderson deal (though he was cut). Can't say how happy I am reggie will retire a bengal -- i hate seeing guys that meant so much to the team in another uniform. I know it's a business etc etc etc but i'm a fan and don't like seeing some of our key guys in other teams' uniforms.
BlainThePain
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20100515/SPT02/305150011/1066/Bengals+WR++All+going+wellWhen tight end Reggie Kelly entered the league with the Falcons in 1999, he got plenty of mentoring from the veteran players. He is hoping to extend that same hand to Chase Coffman and Jermaine Gresham. While Coffman did not get on the field in the regular season last year, Kelly thinks that last year's third-round pick will bounce back and have a good season."I really took to him when I first met him," Kelly said of Coffman. "He came in with the attitude that he wanted to learn, was very humble, willing to work hard and make his own name (Chase's dad, Paul, was a former NFL tight end). That really touched me and (made me want) to go the extra mile with him." How could you not want this guy on your team?
