#41 is Terence Newman. Does that mean the Bengals are looking at him as well -- is he even a FA?

If the guy can cover, great, but there is a reason nobody has come close to signing this guy. Of course, it was the same deal with Crocker and he has turned out alright. Never hurts to have veteran competition at training camp for a position we are shallow at.

Another Dallas guy. Would that mean he's another "Zimmer guy," or was Zim gone by the time they brought him into Dallas?

Uh,.. I think he got in either in zims last season or right when zim left...

Make this happen!

He's a cover guy to compliment Roy, and he can share snaps with Crocker. The safety depth would go from shady to strong.

This is the type of move you make if you're planning on a playoff run. I would immediately feel better about the safety position, and the Bengals as a whole if they signed Hamlin. He's not a long term solution... but neither is Roy. This is a win-now move.

Keep the strong running game. Check.

Improve the passing game. Check.

Add depth to the defense. Check.

Optimists, say 'aye'

Aye!

Agreed plus we seem to have good luck with ex cowboys.

Bengals are also bringing in safety C.C. Brown for a look. Seems like they aren't just checking out a safety... they are actively pursuing one.

Hamlin seems like the clear choice over Brown, but if this is a depth move, pay demands might come into play.

I'm really hoping they sign Hamlin though. In a season where the Bengals play the Saints, Colts, and Chargers, I'd like to see them stockpile talent in the secondary.

I can't really complain about them getting Hamlin at all. He would be the depth we don't currently have and like Derek said, he's not long term.

Hamlin never played up to the level he'd shown at Seattle. As a depth move, sure, though I think they really erred by passing over several of the better prospects in the draft.

They've also brought C.C. Brown of the Giants in for visit according to KFFL.

Agree that he's not all of that and some, but he is depth and better than seeing Tom Nelson in a starter's role if it had to happen.

I agree with the thought of them making a mistake passing on a safety that was there. I will be watching Myron Rolle this year...

Fair enough. And I certainly wouldn't have minded seeing him in stripes.

But I can't help but be reminded of how many here were outraged that the Bengals passed on Ko Simpson in the 3rd round back in '06... and how underwhelming his career has been.

I'll grant you that as well Derek. It's always a role of the dice and as fans, we like to think we know. However, seeing the Bengals talk about AND look at adding depth at the safety position tells me they know, just like the fans, that it's an issue. For that reason, overlooking Rolle in the 6th freakin' round is where I have the most issue. Then again, that's what I think I know...

My opinion of the 6th round pick for the Bengals is well documented... so it won't take much convincing for me to believe that Rolle would have been a better choice.

That said, if the Bengals are attempting to build a winner for the 2010 season, I'm willing to bet that Hamlin is the best choice to add solid depth at a position of need.

Yes... they will still have the need for safety help next year in the draft. However, that has been true for the entire Marvin Lewis era... so as long as the Bengals actually have four safeties on the roster that have had successful starting experience... that's about as happy as I can be without investing a 1st or 2nd round pick on the position.

And when I think about the Bengals secondary, I'm starting to worry less and less about pass happy teams. Joseph and Hall are the keys of course... but having Ghee, Trent, and Jones, along with four decent safeties is starting to build my confidence in a defense that may be even better than last year's version.

No you won't, because he won't be playing. The guy isn't any good. He's smart off the field, but not football smart. He has no football instincts whatsoever, and reacts slowly to everything. Combine that with lack of speed, and he just isn't an NFL player.
