cincyhokie
I was thinking about what effect Rex Ryan has had on his team this year. Very emotional, cries alot, talks alot, eats alot...he's a very intense guy. Then you have the Jim Caldwell's and Dick Lebeau's of the world. I think Marvin falls somewhere in between. How important is it to have an emotional and motivating coach? Is there a difference in a HC's and opposed to coordinators? What about Rex Ryan? How much of the Jets' play is emotion? Or are they this good? Can he play this same underdog motivational card next year...and what happens when his rah-rah, talking smack approach meets a losing streak? When do the players tune him out? walzav29
They tune out next year. They are on a great run. They whipped us and the Chargers, but they were 9-7 and I still don't think they would have made the playoffs if Peyton played that whole game. Rah-rah only gets you so far and then it's x's and o's in my opinion. I think Marvin is a teacher which can work. I am very impressed with the way he was willing and able to change the type of team this is.
gregstephens
I dunno...you have the 'Town Cryer' Dick Vermeil, who was quite successful. You have 'Playoffs!?' Jim Mora, who on the whole, not so much.
kingwilly
I think it depends on the players.Rex brings in guys, drafts guys and keeps guys who respond to the hot air.Personally, I've seen all types of styles work. From the Bill Walsh/Holmgren/George Seiffert calm and proefessional...to intense guys like Cowher/Del Rio/Fisher, to the wack jobs like Ryan.I think that the Ryan act is harder to maintain, ie you can only blow smoke and jack people up so much...fatigue sets in and folks become immune.I think ML has decent balance in his approach. We've heard him rip the players and peel paint. we've heard him stay calm and get the players to focus. I think you've got to have the full range and be adaptable.Seeing Ryan's act married with a top running game and high-end defense, got them only part way. Without the help of Indy and Cincy, they are on a golf course somewhere.Indy will give them a wake-up call here shortly.
cincyhokie
I think what the Jets are doing is pretty impressive, but they are overacheiving. There's no way they play at this level next year. In fact, I'm wondering if they run out of emotional gas this week against Indy the same way the Bengals looked flat against Houston after the Baltimore game.If they can sustain this roll and win the Super Bowl, it will be very impressive. To see our new formula win it, and it's not the Bengals. Will give me an upset stomach. I've been wanting to win a Superbowl since 1981. I truly understand WIle E. Coyote's quest. To see the 9-7 Jet's come out of nowhere and win it. I just don't like it.
skyline
The rah-rah motivation goes away after awhile. It can work over the short term, but the best coaches encourage players to be motivated from within. It's those players that will keep up their strict exercise/eating regiments over the offseason, put in extra time with the game film, and generally go that extra mile that's required to really excel. ArmyBengal
I like seeing coaches get excited when their team and players do well, but there's limits to it and I just don't like the way Ryan goes about it.Funny story is, I completed a physical on Rex Ryan's son to join the Military. He saw my Bengals gear in my office and inquired. He then told me about his dad Rex and I was intrigued listening to him tell me how his father was always real intense and emotional about things, but when it came down to it, he said his father was full of sh*t. Always the same story regardless of the situation without thought to the impact it has.Now that might just be a disgruntled young kid whose parents got divorced, but something told me he wasn't far off... And yes, I think that it's telling no matter what the circumstance.
cincyhokie
Odds on Rex Ryan crying in the locker room after the loss today: 2 to 1.
cincyhokie
I honestly think this guys a good coach but he's going to run out of room for error with the media and his players eventually. That and he's a douchebag.NEWSRyan: Gesture toward fans ’stupid and inappropriate’Posted: January 31st, 2010 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: New York Jets, Rex RyanJets coach Rex Ryan issued a statement Sunday, apologizing for “stupid and inappropriate” behavior after a photo of him making an obscene gesture toward Dolphins fans surfaced on the Internet.“I wouldn’t accept that type of behavior from one of the coaches or players, and it’s unacceptable from me,” Ryan said of the incident, which reportedly occurred Saturday night at a mixed martial-arts event in Miami. “I apologize to the Jets organization, the National Football League and NFL fans everywhere.”Said Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum: “Rex showed extremely poor judgment and his conduct was inappropriate. redsbengalsbucks
Seems as if the Ryan family has smarts that pertain only to football X' and O's. Just a chip off the old man's cracked block. At least in thier case the football smarts seem to have been passed to the next generation, still wondering if Mike really is the son of Paul Brown.
