Offensive Line:Overall Thoughts

Williams-I don't understand all of the love going on right with Bobbie. He has been very solid, but I feel this was his worst year. I'd like to see how many of the sacks off of the right side were actually his guy as opposed to the RT's man. Give Livings a shot here, or look in the draft and sign Bobbie to a one/two year deal and let him finish out his career here.

Bobbie was credited with giving up 4 QB sacks, 1 QB hits, and 12 QB pressures.

Compare that to Whitworth, who gave up 5 QB sacks, 6 QB hits, and 14 QB pressures at the LT spot, and you'll see how poor of a season Bobbie had at pass blocking.

He didn't get a ton of help from Cook though, who gave up 1 QB sack, 4 QB hits, and 14 QB pressures.

For the LG spot... Mathis gave up 0 QB sacks, 6 QB hits, and 4 QB pressures, Livings gave up 0 QB sacks, 1 QB hit, and 7 QB pressures.

And speaking of Bobbie being the veteran for this O-Line... he had 9 penalties. Only Whitworth had more. Mathis only had 2, and Cook had 4. Seems like only the veterans had real penalty problems this season. I think it's time for Bobbie to go.

Bobbie can go.

Livings or Mathis can move over. I have no worries in doing this.

Having Roland and Collins backing up Whit and Andre makes me VERY happy.

Having Whit and Luigs backing up Livings and Mathis makes me VERY happy.

Having Luigs backing up Cook makes me very happy.

The line is in a good spot. Taking a G in r4-6 would be smart.

I agree with about everything you said. I'm not sure if I want Bobbie to leave or not. I'm kind of mixed on him right now. I think you resign him to a two year deal and if you find something better in the draft, you let him go before training camp starts to try to latch on with another team.

I'd give the line a solid "B" grade. Definitely the best year as a unit, since at least '06, especially in the run game. I think the pass blocking faltered down the stretch, but Carson wasn't able to keep LBs honest with the play-action, which was a factor. Hopefully, this changes in '10.

Whit was surprisingly solid all year, and excelled against some of the better pash rushers in our league. If Carson says he's the best in the game, I'll take his word for it. After all, he never said that about Levi Jones, whom I thought was a clear Top 10 OT in all of football, when he was healthy.

On the contrary of others, I think Mathis is a future star and he played well in tandem with Whit on the left side. He's a slightly less-athletic Steiny with a mean streak. Ced had a lot of long gains running left this year.

Cook did solid, although I think he wore down in the 2nd half. We need to find out if Luigs can do anything in spelling Cook for a series or two each game. Out of all the OL's (minus maybe 'Dre), I think he has the potential to make the biggest leap in '10, especially if he can get stronger and maybe about 15-20 pounds bigger.

Bobbie had a down year, but he's still the heart and soul of this football team, and he played well in the running game. I say sign him to a 2-year extension, and draft his 2012 replacement this year.

I think Roland was greatly exposed in the second half, and teams seemingly had their way with him in rushing the QB down the stretch. The good news is that Andre Smith looks like the real deal. He was blowing guys 5 yards off the ball in the last quarter of the season, on a pretty consistent basis.

The depth is also good with Roland, Livings, and Collins as the top backups and I think we can find another guard project in the 5th round or later, if Shirley doesn't make the transition. The fact he is still on the roster probably means that he's doing OK in practice, in playing G for the first time.

i agree, the fact is this group is nothing spectacular and just barley good enough to be average.
