Palmer sounds off on Benson

Recommended Posts

I don't think we have a real basis of even having the comparison talks about Ced and Rudi until we see Ced work with the new line with some contact and so forth.

Sorry, but I think there's some room for comparision. For example, while there may be plenty of differences between the two players the job load each player is expected to carry as the feature back is well known. In fact, let's pencil in a predicted workload of 345 carries....the average number of rush attempts RJ produced over a 3-year period. Now factor in whatever average per rush you feel Benson is capable of achieving while running behind THIS offensive line. And before you puss out by whining about the shape of the O-line keep in mind we're only talking about run blocking, something this group should do well. So just for giggles I'm going to pencil in a modest and realistic APC of 4.0. For those of you who think that average is a tad too high then round it down to wherever you think best.

So let's see what I've got. 345 carries, a modest APC of 4.0, and a rushing total of 1,380 yards.

Now answer this question. Why shouldn't that type of Clockwork Rudi production be possible again? In fact, if Benson is indeed superior to Rudi in just about every measurable way why shouldn't that type of production be a given IF Benson proves to be as durable as Rudi once was?

You raise very salient points. I think there are a lot of variables and unknowns left at this point in time before we can make comparisons, but you've done the math and logic is there. I'm certainly not saying it's not possible.

In fact, with your permission, I may use some of your points and math in an article on this very issue tonight. I'll credit you, of course. In fact, I can even give you half my anticipated stake in the deal, which would roughly two quarters to two quarters and a dime for you. I know that's not you typically care to find in the envelope, but let me know. Not being a wise guy either.

Seriously, you kosher with it, I'll cite some of your info in tonight's piece. It's good discussion fodder.

It's not only possible....I think it should be the expected. The key is durability.

You don't need to give credit to me for a guess...which is all I'm doing. That said, I would like to hear other predictions of how Benson will perform behind this O-line.....with Palmer under center.

I'm still going to reserve the judgment until training camp. Of course, now that my son is into baseball and has told me he doesn't want to go to the intrasquad scrimmage this year for the first time in five years, I won't get to see it myself. I like baseball and all, but it does kinda break my heart he's lost the passion for football. Hopefully, he'll righten up by football season, but...

I'm sorry, I got distracted.
