HairOnFire Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 We should bring in the HOF to be our Oline coach! Sorry, I never played a down on the O-line....unless you count spot duty as a TE from time to time. Rather, I was the guy running around doing a very bad imitation of Deacon Jones. So that's where my perspective on offensive lineman was formed. To me, they're punishment sponges. Fat men purposely built and selected to be beaten on. Quote
HAPPYJAQ Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 paul alexander has always been known as one of the best o-line coaches in the league. he's had two years now where he's been given garbage and all of a sudden he becomes the scapegoat. sad.I'll give Whitworth and Collins a call, let them know you think they are garbage, see what proceeds from thereand no, Paul Alexander is not known as such. Unless by "always" you really meant "never". Then yeah.Alexander is pretty well regarded around the league as one of the better offensive line coaches. The fact that he survived the Jeff Blake era and still remains is solid enough in itself. He was also in the mix for the Syracuse job earlier this year, before pulling out of consideration. I do question is ability to evaluate talent along the line but he's done the best job he can with what he's had.Speaking of Mr. Alexander, he was the Bengals representative at Jason Smith's Pro Day on Wednesday. http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/03/03/smith-is-m...aylors-pro-day/ Quote

HAPPYJAQ Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 Orlando Pace, anyone?Nevermind, that would make too much sense, especially considering the fact that we all love Levi Jones and have him under contract already. Quote
TJJackson Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 what an insightful and clever replyYeah, it's right up there with claiming Alexander has "been given garbage" to work with. Quote
HairOnFire Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 Orlando Pace, anyone?Nevermind, that would make too much sense, especially considering the fact that we all love Levi Jones and have him under contract already. I'd say it doesn't make sense because the Bengals already have a broken OLT under contract making millions, and probably can't afford another. That said, the Pace release is interesting and relevant in at least one way. The Rams will now flip Alex Barron to the left side....opening up a hole on the right. And before anyone mentions it, yeah, they've also announced their plan to slide a young OG they like into the ORT slot. But I'm not buying it....for all of the obvious reasons, and one that may not be so obvious. Much like the Whitworth situation, the Rams have plenty of reason to believe the player in question could make a switch if needed, but they really like Bell at OG. IMHO this doesn't put them out of the market for any of the top OT prospects. Jason Smith is considered the least ready to start at OLT immediately, and the same is true for Monroe but to a lesser degree. And then there's Andre Smith to consider. (Maybe) Quote

If it's not an OT, they almost have to trade down. Quote

And it's realistic if you're still solidly entrenched in Camp Crab....as many seem to be. My guess is still OT though, and I'll remind again...the Rams are scheduled to have diner with Andre Smith after todays Pro Day. Quote
firemarvinNOW Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 Andre Smith will be the biggest BUST of this draft!!!! Hes terrible so Im sure we will get him!!!! Quote

cincy9275 Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 what an insightful and clever replyYeah, it's right up there with claiming Alexander has "been given garbage" to work with.i have no clue how some consider alexander as a top o-line coach in this league. paul has been here what 15 years and has really done what? 1 probowler his whole time here, our o-line has been crap for all but 3 years he has been here. i can only think of about 4 linemen who where drafted here that developed in to good linemen. willie, steinbach, goff, levi for a couple years. whit and collins maybe, but time will tell. they all were 1st and 2nd rd picks except collins. so what has he really developed? i can't think of any late round picks that turned in to quality linemen that he is responsible for. not trying to bash the guy but i don't think he has done all that well. 15 years 6 starters and one prowbowler, not really a good career. BengalPimp Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Unfortunately, our OLine coach would have coached Munoz into becoming an average playerMunoz is off-limits when it comes to jokes. Quote
kingwilly Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Aren't we using that Denver zone-blocking scheme now? He might end up being a decent backup here. If I remember correctly one of the criticisms made after Foster was traded to Detroit had to do with him being a poor fit in anything but a zone blocking scheme.I do not recall this team moving to a zone blocking scheme a la Denver.I think Foster could be a decent back-up. Collins, Whit, Roland (who I though played quite well) with Levi, Foster and a Rookie backing them up. Now, all we need is a Center. Quote
kentjett Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Andre Smith has the best feet and technique of any of the other tackles. He isn't as strong as some of the others. He has been a high character guy throughout his career besides the one combine episode. Watch his tape and you'll realize that this guy is a top tier LT. His combine fiasco just might hook the Bengals up w/ the top talent in the draft. Quote

HAPPYJAQ Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 I posted this in another thread, but thought it might be more visible here. Anybody interested in bringing Big Willie back? He's a goner in Baltimore, whether they sign Pace to play RT or not. I think he'd welcome the opportunity to finish his career here, if he is in fact released.http://www.kffl.com/player/382/NFL Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted March 20, 2009 Author Report Posted March 20, 2009 I would but I doubt they cut him. They need a left tackle, but with Pace's injury problems, it really doesn't make sense. But then again if they wanna do it feel free. I won't stop him. If he were cut, I'd love to have him back so he can get his Super Bowl with us, that would be really special. Quote

I'd love to see the team get Willie for insurance. He's still pretty dominant on running downs. The only question is whether he can stay healthy enough for a full season. Next season will be his 14th year, I believe. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted March 20, 2009 Author Report Posted March 20, 2009 Willie is a beast, not to mention a fat one. But, It would be fitting and proper that he retire a Bengal. Let him play one more year and let him go out with a team he was suppose to go out on. I think it would give this team some motivation to get that Super Bowl ring for him, kind of like the Steelers did for the Bus. That was their motivation for the season. I don't know, I guess that is my Hollywood ending. Quote
