i dont care about freeing up the draft, i care about freeing up Carson to drop some BOMBS.

I care VERY much about freeing up the draft. It would allow us to target guys that can in fact free up Carson to do what you are hoping for or, at a minimum, maybe give us another player to look at for the defensive side of the ball. Like I said, ANYTHING that frees up the draft for the Bengals could only be a good thing.

I agree with you though and CAN'T wait to see Carson come back this season !!!

i understand your point, but my point is that i want success now.

Ditty, I want a Super Bowl NOW, but I'm just not so convinced it's going to happen that quickly. The team is young and is going to be younger this season. Funnier things have happened and the Bengals could always make a push, but I'm still thinking 8-8 range.

1. Karney

2. Kuhn

3. Weaver

4. Griffith

5. Smith

is the order i'd rank them as far as value, fit, and price. But trust me, i'd take any one of them.

Anyone of them would improve our running game and protection of Carson dramatically - i.e. an actual presence of those two things. If we sign one then great for the draft. Failing that, getting a good prospect in the later rounds of the draft would also help. Either situation certainly beats the s**t out of the half-assed FB-cum-revolving door policy we have now.

Lorenzo Neal is available? Why the hell isn't he here? Did anyone notice how LT's play dropped off after he lost his fullback (Don't counter with injuries)

Look at what the Ravens did last year with him on the squad. Whoever we bring in he needs to bring in a good blocking fullback, it makes the RB better than he is.....For an example see Thomas Jones stats in NY last year!

He is a good RB, but not as good as his OLINE and Fullback made him look!

FB's can go along way in this league. Look at what Tony Richardson has done throughout his career. Whatever happened to Tahi's visit? He did pretty well blocking for Adrian Peterson in Minnesota and I thought the Bengals were freeing up money to bring either him or Kuhn in and possibly George Foster.

the only issue with Kuhn or Tahi is that they are RFA's. Not sure if we have enough money to lure either player away from their current teams.

Kuhn was just in for a visit so hopefully something is getting worked out.

My guess is that the Bengals are going to wait until the RFA deadline and pay close attention to the cap room that Minnesota and Green Bay have at that time to make an offer to one of two that their current team won't be able to match.

It's a pretty similar strategy to the one the Bengals used last year to get Utecht through RFA from the Colts.

Neal said when he left he would never play for the Bengals again.

I'm not trying to undermine the importance of the fullback position for this team and while I agree that a proven guy would be helpful, I'm not sold that we can't find the same in the draft. There are at least 3 guys in the draft that I would be VERY happy in getting.

If I'm the Bengals I wouldn't offer a contract to any of the RFA FB's. Rather, I'd wait to see what happens in the draft, and in the days immediately following. In short, if all they're looking for is a lead blocker they can probably find a very good one very late in FA.

i agree.

i disagree about making an offer to Tahi or Kuhn. but if they don't offer a contract, one only hopes we take a FB in round 3-5. they wont find a very good one late in FA, that is the part i disagree with the most.

The good FB's are signed quickly. Karney was on the FA market for all of about 2 days before St. Louis snagged him. The guys left are the players that teams are obviously not searching for. We need an impact FB about as bad as we need a impact C.

The Bengals can get a up-and-coming FB like Tahi or Kuhn and used that 5th round selection on a 4th round caliber guy who someone slipped to the 5th.

.... if all they're looking for is a lead blocker.....

Did some of you miss this part when you read my musings?

Yeah, they need a new FB. But what type of FB are they looking for now that JJ is gone? Are they looking for a more complete multi-skilled player or Thor's Hammer? Do they look for the above average pass catching skills that JJ had OR does someone in the warroom remind everyone how those skills were mostly ignored even when JJ was healthy and fit?

Simply put, if you're looking for a Karny you move when the situation dictates you move. But if your targeting a Tahi....it's okay to wait.

Very well put, I think I must be sick, I'm starting to agree with HOF.

From NFL.com's report on BYU's Pro Day....

"Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson was there to work out in conjunction with RB Fui Vakapuna. He worked out, as all the players did, indoors on FieldTurf and could be more of a fullback in the NFL. He measured in at 5-11 ¼, 244 pounds and ran a 4.83 and a 4.84 in the 40. He had a 34-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 2-inch broad jump, 29 bench press reps, a 4.40 short shuttle and a 7.37 three-cone drill."

Draft Scout Fui Vakapuna News

03/11/09 - BYU Pro day: Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson was there to work out in conjunction with RB Fui Vakapuna. He worked out, as all the players did, indoors on FieldTurf and could be more of a fullback in the NFL. He measured in at 5-11 1/4, 244 pounds and ran a 4.83 and a 4.84 in the 40. He had a 34-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 2-inch broad jump, 29 bench press reps, a 4.40 short shuttle and a 7.37 three-cone drill. Scouts appeared to be very impressed with Fui Vakapuna during his workout. More than one scout spent extra time with him having him run more individual drills than the others in attendance. Vakapuna looked very good in both his agility and strength drills and could very well end up on an NFL roster as a fullback. – Brandon Gurney, TBS/Gil Brandt, NFL.com

02/15/09 - PRO POTENTIAL: FB Fui Vakapuna struggled with injuries the past few years, but could be a serviceable blocking back at the next level. He's getting some comparisons to former BYU teammate Naufahu Tahi, who has carved out a similar niche in Minnesota
