Houshmandzadeh to Bengals: Don't franchise me

Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has laid the groundwork for a fight with the team if Cincinnati decided to place the franchise player tag on him: He says he won't participate in any of their offseason programs.

"I don't want any part of the tag," Houshmandzadeh told the Dayton Daily News. The receiver is due to become a free agent on Feb. 27, but the Bengals can retain their rights to him by placing the franchise tag on Houshmandzadeh, which would require a salary average to the top five highest-paid receivers in the league.

"(Marvin) Lewis made an emphasis of wanting guys at the offseason programs, on the field sessions and things of that nature. If I get franchised I'm not going to be there," Houshmandzadeh said.

"So it goes against everything that the coaches want. You can't have the coach come out and say one thing and do another. If you do, then you're not going to have the cohesiveness he said he wanted when the season ended."

He's a cancer. He's lucky he even had a job. He should have been cut after the 02 season. I'm done with tj.

Jesus Christ people, has TJ ever been there for OTA's ?? No. No one was complaining about his absence when he was leading the league in receptions and going to the pro bowl. Now if he chooses to not show up for others, he gets fined, so whatever I doubt that lasts long. Ask Chad how that went for him.

In regards to not wanting to get tagged, would you ?? I mean if you were to be looking at a long term contract with a big signing bonus and someone tagged you, you would be pissed. Yeah, you would take the money, but what if you got hurt ?? Stop looking at it entirely from YOUR point of view and try seeing it from the other side.

I hate to see players act up, but I can almost accept hearing things come out of TJ's mouth. He's actually earned it...

the scary thing is now that he has said this the bengals may tag him, even if they has no plans to do so prior. mike brown does not like to be told what to do.

although i hear what you're saying army, last year carson and the wr's didn't click until it was too late. tj's right though, we need everyone there for all off season programs, for cohesive purposes, this team needs to trust each other, they need to feel like they are responsible to each other, and showing up to ota's, whether they are voluntary or mandatory, would go a long way in making this a family and more than just a team.

Oh don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see everyone there each time the team gets together to be able to work on things. Timing is HUGE between Carson and his WR's. My point is, it's hard to slam TJ when he's never been there. He always prepared in the offseason and had himself ready at the start of the season. I just think it's misguided hatred especially when TJ has said he wouldn't mind coming back to Cincinnati. He's just leaving open the possibility because he has to see it coming. Once again, no issue with TJ here...

“It would be cool to remain with the Bengals because I got my start there,” Houshmandzadeh said. ”I’m not a person that prefers lots of change in my life, but if change has to happen, then change has to happen. ”

DEATH TO TJ. Rabble rabble rabble.

Let him go. Give him a yr or two with a team who has a shot of at least winning a playoff game or indeed reaching the playoffs to begin with. Time is almost up for him. Use the cap to bring in some younger blood via FA and the draft.

Use his money to extend a quality player who WANTS to be here.

Quotes like these, in the 10 or so years I have been blogging about the Bengals, used to really piss me off. Especially when they would come from long time Bengals fans, because they should really know better.

But I'm pretty sure I am in the "acceptance" stage of being a Bengals fan, so comments like these no longer disappoint me. I understand how important things like rationalization and denial are to being able to tolerate being a fan of this team.

I'm going to throw this out there anyway though:

Once a player has been with the Bengals for a number of years, they go one of three possible ways:

1. Leave quietly via free agency

2. Company man. Piss poor results on the field, but speaks well about the team so there is always a roster spot for him. (See JT)

3. "Cancer." Realizes the Bengals do not have an infrastructure in place that is conducive to winning, and also realizes there are no plans to change, so they want out at all costs.

The only players that want to play for the Bengals are:

1. Has-beens

2. Never-weres

3. Blind Optimism

4. Need a second chance

You all have seen Gladiator, right? When the king was on his death bed, he offered the throne to Maximus. Maximus turned it down because he did not want to rule. "That is precisely why it must be you," the king replied.

Its like that with the Bengals and TJ or any other player who has been with the team for a few years. If they have been with the team that long, then they know that the front office isn't really trying to win. Just sort of going through the motions, with a minimalist approach, the sole goal being to maximize profits regardless of on field performance.

Most players are competitive and want to win. So when I see players like Chad, TJ, Dillon, Spikes, Lee Johnson, etc etc etc, get fed up with the Bengals, then I understand exactly where they are coming from.

Every time a Bengal player recognizes Mike Brown's racket and wants out, all the sudden he is a cancer. But the very fact that they want out so badly (because they actually want to win, imagine that) is "precisely why they must stay."

Guys like JT who rah rah all the way through the ineptitude are the guys I would kick to the curb. Guys like TJ, Chad, Dillon, Spikes, etc EXPECT to win. And when they don't, they get mad and want to find out why. And when they find out why, they want out. Then fans call them "cancers."

We all know who the real cancer is to the Cincinnati Bengals. We know who the real cancer is so well, that even mentioning it is the very definition of beating a dead horse. Its the same big elephant that has been in the Bengals forums since the 20th century.

But hey, if bashing players who are fed up with this "NFL Team" helps people with their "Bengalfan Affliction" then more power to them. Call it what it is though: straight up denial and rationalization 101.

The Persian spun deftly away from his attackers, his sword a constant blur. When the last of his rivals fell bloody and silent he turned at last to the glass covered luxury box containing the bloated emperor. Slowing striding forward he reaches down and grabs hold of a fallen staff. In a heartbeat the shaft is sent flying towards a bald wreath covered head.

The strike misses. The spearpoint buries itself deep into the decorative woodwork with a shattering sound.

"Are you not entertained?" shouts the Persian.

Slowly a hand reaches out and plucks a single grape from a bowl of fruit. "Indeed, I am." whispers the bald head. Quickly he turns and shouts his orders while underlings flop about. "That one still amuses me. Tag him, and bring him to me so that I may shower him with golden coins and fatty cheeses."

Good times.

I'm saying we need a peaceful off-season.

We are Bengals fans right ?? Can someone explain to me just what in the hell is a peaceful off-season ?? It sounds nice. Is that anything like a unicorn ?? You know, those mythical creatures that appear really nice, but just don't exist. Well, at least not for us...

I agree though...

I'm saying we need a peaceful off-season. With everyone on the same page.

I'm sure you will get your wish, if you are talking about Bengals Management. If you are talking about blogging Bengals fans though, I wouldn't hold my breath. :P

Who is left as a Bengal fan at this point anyway? Seems like:

1. Longtime fan. If the 90's didn't run them off, then you have to figure they are sticking with the team no matter what the on field results are. Their level of optimism about the Bengals depends on how high their levels of denial and rationalization are. This is the heart of the dead horse: fed-up vs die-hard.

2. Fan that came on around 2005 or so. They have seen one good season, a few average ones, and one bad one. Thinks we are "just a player or two away" and has no idea why this amuses longtime fans.

3. The basic "I just have fun at the games regardless of the score" type of fan. Cheerleaders, usually alcoholics... whatever you want to call them.

People from these 3 groups will always disagree. Group 1 isn't going anywhere. And there is a sucker born every minute, so you have to figure group 2 isn't going anywhere. Group 3 will always be there too, checkbook in hand, no matter what s**te sandwich Mike Brown serves them. This has been the m.o. of Bengals forums since the beginning.

:sure::cheers: Could not have said it better myself.

So, next season where do we get a 1000 yard receiver to replace TJ's production.

If Chad acts up again, we'll have another sorry year on offense with 8 in the box on defense facing Carson and the gang.

Once again, this isn't what you or I think they are going to do, it's what the organization thinks is going to happen and I'm telling you they think Simpson is going to be BIG for them next season. If that's what they think is going to happen, then there is a whole bunch of stuff I could see happening with the WR corps.

Seriously though, it's just time to move on. It's like saying, what are the Reds going to do with Dunn's 40 HR's ? Move on, that's what...

They could have '88 Jerry Rice and '07 Randy Moss on the field together...none if it will not matter if the Bengals can't block or run the football.

If we are able to somehow give Carson Palmer some '05-like protection (and a running game), they can trot just about any NFL caliber wide receiver out there and be productive. Think Tom Brady before he got Randy and Wes Welker.

....and that's why I say no to T.J., the 10 million dollar man.

400 from Simpson and 780 from Caldwell. I wonder if Chris Henry will make it?

The Bengals prepared to cut TJ loose last year by drafting Simpson and Caldwell. We all know that.

I don't count on Simpson since he gave us nothing last season. Caldwell I do. He could give us some of those TJ possession catches out where the linebacker and SS lurk. With Caldwell, once he catches it, he'll give us something TJ couldn't...break away speed.

Can't count on Chris Henry, yet.

Can't count on Chad.

Should anyone be surprise if the Bengals draft a WR high in the draft?
