With Gardner coming on board next week and with the DL picks from the draft, we will see an over all upgrade to the line.

Add to that upgrades at LB, S and CB.

We will have to wait and see, but I think that the 04 Bengals "D" will be big improvement over 03.

Play Off in 04....

Here is what Bengals Defensive Line Coach Jay Hayes had to say in a Cincinnati Post article.

Defensive Line sees Changes

"Hayes said the goal this season is to be more effective on stopping the run on early downs, creating longer situations on second and third downs, and getting more pressure on the quarterback from the linemen without having to bring a linebacker or someone from the secondary on a blitz. Specifics will change depending on the style of offense being played by the opponent, but the general philosophy remains the same.

"We got pressure at times last year but we want more sacks out of the front four," Hayes said. "What that's going to take is better work on technique and timing. There were times when we were a step short of getting that sack. Hopefully, now we'll be a step closer."

The Bengals had 30 sacks last season, six more than they got in 2002 but well short of the franchise-record 48 in 2001. Thornton and Clemons led the team with six each, while Williams had two and right end Justin Smith had five. The fourth overall pick in the draft in 2001, Smith has seen his sack totals decrease in each of his first three seasons, but 2003 was easily his best overall season. He led Bengals linemen with 91 tackles, demonstrating better patience and durability against the run than he did in his first two seasons.

He also was one of those who missed out on some sack opportunities.

"Everybody wants Justin to be a 10-, 12-, 15-sack guy and be tough against the run," said Hayes. "People look at big numbers and if he had gotten a few of those sacks, you could have been talking about him as a possible Pro Bowl player."

Seems that they liked what they saw from Smith last year.

Notice that Coach Hayes thinks that 2003 was his best season so far.

My Hope is that Smith will have an Outstanding year, playing the Pass and the Run equally Well.

Play Offs in 04....

Just like Peter Warrick, Smith is not a bust but he was also not the 4th best player in the draft. Chad Johnson, Willie Anderson, and hopefully Palmer are the only players on the team worth that high of a pick.

yeah, I agree with that

plus we got alotta steals....I'm really feeling our secondary....
